BAFTA shortlist announced, Winslet & Slumdog Millionaire lead

The shortlist for this year's BAFTA awards ceremony has been announced with Kate Winslet picking up two Best Actress nominations for her roles in The Reader and Revolutionary Road.

Danny Boyle's 'Slumdog Millionaire' stole the headlines earlier this week for sweeping the board at the Golden Globes, and with 11 nominations at this year's BAFTAs, it'd be a pretty safe bet to assume it's gonna do pretty well this side of the pond. David Fincher's 'The Curious Case of Benjamin Button' has also received 11 nominations.

And what would any early-2009 awards ceremony be without a Heath Ledger nomination? Nothing, hence why he's up for a posthumous award for his role as, yup you guessed it, The Joker, one of nine 'The Dark Knight' is up for. Brad Pitt and Meryl Streep also feature amongst the nominations.

    • i thought the Dark Knight was HUGELY overrated. I mean it was alright and I enjoyed parts of it. But people were claiming it's the greatest movie they've ever seen, and quite frankly this to me makes me think that those people seriously need to watch more films. If it wins I think it will be largely a sympathy vote for someone who died (tragically) young.

As for giving awards to art films pretentiously. The BAFTAs aren't really known for that, and the Oscars are renowned for giving awards to however bribes them the most. AND I personally see film as an art form and a film that has interesting cinematography is ALWAYS better and to do so it doesn't have to be inaccessible. Wall-E has some of the best cinematography i have seen in ages and kids love that.

    • I agree with richjm.
If Heath Ledger was still alive, I doubt he would even get a nomination. The Dark Knight should and will win all the "technical" awards (sound, special effects, etc.), but doesn't deserve much else.

    • Am I the only one who thought the Dark Knight was good but not amazing? I think Heath Ledger was great in it but would he be such a front-runner for awards if he hadn't tragically died?

Good to see Kate Winslet leading the nominations.

    • I'm glad that The Dark Knight is getting the honor it deserves here. It's genre as action and super hero generally cause critics and the award community to pretentiously snub good films instead overglorifying obscure art films that neither many see, appreciate, or enjoy
