Keanu Reeves will star in cowboy bebop movie

The Japanese animation studio Sunrise has officially announced the plans for a live-action film adaptation of its Cowboy Bebop science-fiction anime franchise. The American film studio Twentieth Century Fox, the production company 3 Arts Entertainment, and Sunrise itself are collaborating on the project. Keanu Reeves (The Matrix, A Scanner Darkly, Johnny Mnemonic) is slated to star. Joshua Long is acting as a production supervisor, and Erwin Stoff, a film producer who worked closely with Reeves on The Matrix and A Scanner Darkly, is also attached. The associate producers are Sunrise President Kenji Uchida, the original Cowboy Bebop director Shinichiro Watanabe, and the original series script supervisor Keiko Nobumoto. The Sunrise studio itself and Masahiko Minami (former Sunrise producer and BONES studio co-founder) are both acting as production consultants.

    • This is so amazing!
I never would have thought a live action Cowboy Bebop movie would ever happen. I thought Firefly would be the closest I'd ever see.
      Thanks for the info!

    • Look, guys. Be serious and realistic about this one. At least someone of name recognition is being tied to this film so quickly. By Keanu Reeves being attributed to this film so early in, a shit-ton of money will be allocated to the filming and polishing of this movie. If you don't think name recognition means anything to the overall production value of a live-action anime adaptation, then just go look at the trailer for the new DBZ flick. Or better yet, check out that new Street Fighter/Chun Li film. All I can say is wow...in the bad kind of way.

I admit his acting can be questionable in certain films, but he is alright in science fiction. I had no problems with him in the matrix. I for one applaud this decision, and I am giving him and the filmmakers a chance on this. I could do no better in casting.

    • I like Keanu, but he can be very stiff. He could pull it off if he relaxes and tries to make the character fun. Otherwise I think flexible funny and serious Aston Kusher would make a good make a great Spike if he lowers his voice a bit.

    • you're freaking kidding me right? keanu reeves, as spike! been anticipating the film version of this movie for so long --- way to ruin a potentially awesome movie.

keanu radiates something that is alien and inacessible and i don't think spike's character is like that....spike has done bad things in the past, possibly regrets them but doesn't let those things bog him down...we as an audience know that he is a tough guy, lazy, usually motivated by money but that he has a soft spot too.

can keanu do that and will he be believable? i don't know. as neo in the matrix, he was entirely believable because his character started off as naive, trinity was the cynical one, who showed him the ropes, so to speak. spike has a past and he's maybe too much of a wiseguy for keanu to handle.... am i wrong here?

    • I love it when hollywood takes a shit on what I hold scared. Whoever made that casting decision must hold a lot of spite towards the cowboy bebop creators and fans because if they had any sort of clue they would understand that there is no way Keanu could even come close to capturing 1/100th of the personality that Spike exudes. Spike would kill Keanu in a half a heart beat.

I NEVER wanna see Reeves Beebopping. Go wear your black trenchcoat and swallow some red pills somewhere else sunshine. Like back in the Matrix.

    • Ok, why in the hell would the creator or Cowboy Bebop agree to make a live action movie? The animated series and animated movie were freakin' excellent, hell they were and are works of art in means of art, story and character development. Why try to add to something that is perfect the way it is?

    • hm... i have mixed opinions about a live action cowboy bebop movie... i could go for another anime film for the series... but a lot could go wrong with a live action film from an anime series (points at Speed Racer)... i hope Jet is hot... i have always had a thing for him

    • Never really watched Cowboy BeBop.....but still live action and anime don't mix. Why not keep it animated? Its better that way (in my opinion) when you add real people it waters it down.

    • This is the role he can play and play well.

Less we forget the groans of a gay cowboy actor playing the harden Joker.

Proved those idiots wrong. Now people won't shut up about how great he was. Nothing like praise after death.

    • This is great news! I loved the series and wish that they'd bring it back...CB really got me into anime...the smart, meaningful kind. I still use the "TANK" track from the opening credits for my demo :)

    • MizPiz:

This is a perfect example of why I hate Hollywood and why I would much rather watch anime than 99% of the movies released every year. From what I can tell this movie is going to be an epic fail. It completely failed to capture the essence of what is DBZ. None of the actors come off as appropriate for their roles and as far as the story goes who knows what hack job Hollywood has performed to make it friendly and enjoyable for everyone.

    • I don't understand why everything has to become a live action flick; why can't it just left the way it is. I'm not trying to malign Keanu Reeves but I fear this movie might suck

    • Let's all hope for the best and prepare for the worst. This movie could be crap, however lets give credit to Reeves, who is basically the only reason why this movie is even possible(he's partially funding the movie and he says he's a big anime fan).

As for other possible Live-action Hollywood anime films, they include Mushi-Shi, Evangelion, and Akira(which is in production due to Leonardo DiCaprio's Backing)

    • im not the biggest cowboy bebop fan, im i havent seen all the episodes but i know Spike is ironic, layback and FUNNY, i dont have nothing against keanu reeves, but he doesnt give me the right vibe for the role.

    • This should be interesting.

Keanu doesn't seem to fit the role, but I won't jump the gun and say it's a bad move just yet. I'll give him a chance. I like him, so I hope he does well.

    • like most live-action hollywood movies based on anime, this film probably shouldn't be made. however, since it is being made, i think keanu reeves just _might_ actually work as spike.

    • I love Cowboy BeBop but live anime never really works out too well. So lets just say Im pessimistic.

More importantly though, who is playing Ein?

    • I love CB! Skeptical on this one. Hollywood's been known to fudge cool things up.

This is my opin, but they (the filmmakers) should have gotten Lee Pace from Pushing Daisies and The Fall for Spike. I know he's not as "commercial" as Keanu, but he looks the part. The Fall is proof of his physical prowess.

    • Hollywood is seriously out to screw up anime. The live action DBZ movie looks like a joke and I can't imagine anyone worse to play Spike then Keanu Reeves. Well here's to hoping Hollywood at least gets Ghost in the Shell right.

    • Cowboy Bebop movie! Yes!

Keanu will ruin Spike. Spike is supposed to be an easy-going bad ass. They're both pretty aloof, but I don't see it going well. I'll still watch it though, even if it sucks.

Who would make a good Spike?

i also share this fear. Keanu Reeves just isn't a convincing Spike and they would be dead wrong to cast him as Jet. In fact the only male character i could see him playing would be Ein. Although i just might be way too critical.
