Jeffrey Wells has been keeping a close eye on the fervor over Watchmen, especially since so much acclaim is (rightfully) attached to the graphic novel. It's easy for comic fanboys to get worked up over an adaptation of a tome like this, but this is where my inner fanboy clashes with the cineaste in me: excellent source material and faithful adaptations do not a good film make.
Wells has kept close watch on the developing reactions, the first wave coming in the form of a glowing review from Nerdworld blogger Matt Selman (I'd add Wil Wheaton's reaction to this phase as well), followed by three pans of the film from early screeners.
Now Devin Faraci (CHUD) and Drew McWeeny (Hitfix) have weighed in with raving acclaim for the film.
Wells continues to warn:
"I say again that only non-vested straight-talkers who were never that into comic book geekdom can be trusted on this movie. It may be a great film, or a very good or deeply stirring one, but only the pure of heart and the culturally uncommitted can determine this. Trust no one with any kind of deep-rooted, strongly Catholic investment in geek fanboy culture."
My guess is that fans of the graphic novel will more than likely walk away happy as long as it hits close enough to the source material (obvious misdirection like LXG will be rightfully lambasted). Whether or not it's a phenomenal piece of cinema remains to be seen.
