Eastwood thinks political correctness has made society humourless

The Dirty Harry star insists that he should be able to tell harmless jokes about nationality without fearing that people may brand him "a racist".
"People have lost their sense of humour. In former times we constantly made jokes about different races. You can only tell them today with one hand over your mouth or you will be insulted as a racist," the Daily Express quoted him as saying.
"I find that ridiculous. In those earlier days every friendly clique had a 'Sam the Jew' or 'Jose the Mexican' - but we didn't think anything of it or have a racist thought. It was just normal that we made jokes based on our nationality or ethnicity. That was never a problem. I don't want to be politically correct.

I gotta agree with Clint. I was recently called a racist at a bar (I may never go to again) for making a joke about a friend of mine liking flour tortillas. Everyone believed I said it based on her being Mexican, even though it was based on the simple fact she LIKES flour tortillas. When I explained this to said nosy strangers, they wouldn't believe me or my friend. And I'm the racist one. PC douches. How hard is it to understand the difference between a joke and outright hatred?

Clint is absolutely right!! Homosexuals have no sense of humor. Mel Brook's movie "History of the World" would be banned if the activists had their way- "Okay, faggot, what's next?" "You faggot! Ohhh, yes, Sire!!" Or what about Johnny in "Airplane"? Or Captain Oveur in the same film? - "So, Joey, have you ever been to a Turkish prison?" Yes, due to PC, they would never be allowed to be made today. Now, you better be careful what you say- I told a funny joke teasing the British with this theme and I got my butt chewed out!! Some people have no sense of humor- Remember- the PC police are listening!

"See, there's three kinds of people: dicks, pussies, and assholes. Pussies think everyone can get along, and dicks just want to fuck all the time without thinking it through. But then you got your assholes, Chuck. And all the assholes want us to shit all over everything! So, pussies may get mad at dicks once in a while, because pussies get fucked by dicks. But dicks also fuck assholes, Chuck. And if they didn't fuck the assholes, you know what you'd get? You'd get your dick and your pussy all covered in shit!"

Maybe, just maybe the jokes Clint finds funny are actually offensive.
It's a generational thing, I don't know anyone of my age who still thinks Bernard Manning was funny (70's British comedian) but he was massive.
Jokes about people's race are offensive and upsetting, however, in the context of friends they are told daily. Is this still wrong?

Yeah Clint definitely practices what he preaches, has anyone seen that horrid film, Gran Torino? It was filled with one senseless sterotype after another. As far as jokes....I don't belive that racist jokes are funny, they are always used to insult others, consider Al Jolson in his black face, I'm certain that there were plenty of caucasions who thought that was just good clean fun; Any who, you don't have to be racist to be funny, look at Bill Cosby. I would rather stress what we have in common more than what keeps us apart.

I don't want to be "politicaly correct" either. In fact that entire phrase smacks of something a Communist
would typicaly say because it smacks of Monopoly which in a Country known for Pluralism, realy goes against the grain. I'm glad Clint Eastwood brought that up. I've watched his acting since I was a kid seeing him play Rowdy Yates in the Western black and white TV saga of Rawhide. And now that I'm an adult, I want to be as politicaly incorrect as say Bill Mahar and not simply another steer in the herd. Lets get Jazy. - 3 years ago

People act like it's some comedic, unfathomable thing that people could behave inappropriately in the workplace, but when my mom was just beginning her work as a nurse in the early 70s, she was constantly the target of sexual harassment from male doctors, and it infuriates me when people like you make light of the very rules you benefit from.

Oh, I should retract some of the harshness from my previous post then and try to be a little more direct in the comparison I was making.
I think that "diversity in the workplace"-style orientations are a good thing, because they tell people that they need to respect others of different backgrounds, and serve a job similar to that of anti-harassment legislation. Whereas the harassment legislation comes in when differences becomes a deeply serious and threatening issue to an employee's safety, the emphasis on getting along in a diverse workplace encourages a friendly and accepting environment so that people don't feel excluded or as if they are thought less of by their associates, which can make attending work (an integral part of one's life by any account) a stressful or taxing experience. Does that make sense?
Also, it's easy enough to say "well, that should be common sense, but workplaces just go OVERBOARD," but don't forget that the workplace truly is diverse and there are people in the lower end of the bell curve for brains (and the one for social skills!) who really would do well to take something away from such orientations, and for whom the strict regulations are written.

Here's something humorous: Clint Eastwood owns (or did own) a portion of a certain golfing area on the beach (a gated community) AND they have failed to eliminate rules in their community codes including: no mixed race people, no Jewish people...unless you are a Worker with a pass. :P While they don't enforce this, that is where guys like him live. The basis for political correctness is not "worrying about offending people" but having a general respect for people's differences and being a nice person. We can tell it like it is, but no one will be listening if it's hateful. I think it's gotten a little out of control, but we should be aware of words and actions that damage communities or groups of people.

Naw, the "lefties" are still perfectly fine with "telling it like it is," it's just that mainstream perception of what that means has shifted. In contrast to the time in which Clint grew up, we think non-white non-males are pretty swell and capable folks too now!
If you find yourself in conflict with people who are anti-hate speech and pro-consideration, your perception of "how it is" is what's wrong here.

I don't think racist jokes are what he means exactly, i think he's meaning more the general attitude of our society today. We walk on egg shells.

PC attitudes have their time and place. When I started hearing politicians and pundits refer to Obama as an "oreo" on the news I thought WTF, where's the judgment? Meanwhile people like Chris Rock are still making a career out of racism (and it's still funny!)...as other people mentioned, it's one thing to joke around in your home with people you know well, and another to run your mouth in the middle of Harlem.
It's all about having some common sense.

So when Clint is alone with his friends and he calls one of them "Sam the Jew" and Sam the Jew is fine with that, the police show up and arrest everyone?
As usual with rants against "political correctness" I find Clint's comments un-insightful. Kind of like the other comments here: PC is a scourge, etc.
What's wrong with trying not to offend someone, as as long as you don't censor yourself? There's no shortage of obnoxious jabbing in stand-up comedy.
Is it a massive violation of your integrity to not call Sam the Jew such in private if he requests it? If so, you're a HAIRY-ASSED LOSER - how's that for non-PC?

Because you'd just be soooo secure that it wouldn't mean anything.
Sometimes being secure means having the self-possession to stand up for yourself--to stay put and not vacate your spot on the bus, know what I mean?

What I think is that precisely all those comments that we fear of, have nothing to do with dignity or rights, we just gave too much power to trivial things and put it in the same position with things that really care.
I’m sure if I were a female, I would think the same way, because you know.. men have to deal with shit too, and I don’t have a vagina but I know what is to deal with people trying to take you down in every possible way.

Yeah--if you're a member of the majority [race/gender/anything], you've inherited a position of privilege by being born into a segment of the population that doesn't have a legacy of oppression behind it, because those issues are still expressed in many ways--culture doesn't just fade away within a couple of decades, and those oh-so-hilarious un-PC comments that Clint (and you?) are crusading on behalf of are an example of that.
I'm not trivializing the hardships that every human faces that are NOT tied to discrimination, but you seriously just DON'T face the same sort of challenges as others do for being who they are (my example here being women). Similarly, I'm not saying that every time a woman stubs her toe, it's because everyone is JUST--SO--SEXIST AAROOGH, I'm talking about difficulties tied to this particular issue at hand, which is why I didn't throw in a disclaimer that, yeah, there are other problems out there too.
Insulting/demeaning/rude/hateful comments based on race and gender are tied to dignity and rights in ways it is hard to understand from your position.

There is a vast difference between making ethnic jokes with a buddy who belongs to a different race, and expecting everyone who is of a different race to find your jokes funny. That has always been the case, despite what tough guy Dirty Harry would have you believe.
Every ethnic joke I've ever heard in a public place begins with the teller of the joke looking over their shoulders. And that is because, instinctively, they know they are about to do something a little bit wrong.

Competition breeds successful people. If everyone is considered a "winner," then in reality no one is recognized as a winner. If you tell your kid they are doing great and they are a winner all the time, how is the kid supposed to decipher real success from a fabricated success? How will they learn the dedication to complete something substantial, when they get the same reward from the parent or mentor when they do something mediocre?

And I would argue that youre wrong abby, think about it white guy makes a funny joke about black people instead of people laughing and enjoying the joke everyone makes a huge deal out of it the white guy is labled a racist and he pretty much dies in shame.
While a black guy makes a funny joke about white people and everyone wets themselves.
Its reverse racism and its just as bad as racism.

Clint Eastwood is so very right. We used to make fun of each other even of different races, and not take offense just laugh. There is a difference in being funny and being cruel. We have lost our sense of humor and our common sense. Right on Clint!!!!!!!
