American Jesus: Book of Revelations Told in Comic Books

"The Book of Revelations will be told in comics!

For Mark Millar, the creator behind such eyebrow-raising projects as Wanted, Kick-Ass, War Heroes, Marvel’s Civil War, Ultimates and soon Ultimate Avengers, calling something American Jesus isn’t that big of a deal.

American Jesus is the larger name of Millar’s re-telling of The Book of Revelation from the Bible, set in contemporary times. Both the returned Jesus and the Anti-Christ grow up in a world where at least one of them can more easily reconcile his powers with the notion that he may be a mutant, rather than a supernatural being whose presence signifies the beginning of the end of everything.

The first installment of the three part story, Chosen was originally published in 2004 by Dark Horse, and this week, is being released in a new trade paperback collection bearing the name American Jesus - from Image Comics. "

***

Just to be clear, I tagged this as "movies" because Mark Millar's work has been made into movies and who knows, this one could be as well!

Will you check out "American Jesus"- do you think American audiences will view it as too controversial?

    • I don't think this is an attempt to push religion nor propaganda. It's one comic book writer's take on what revelations might mean to us today, on what Jesus might be like today. It's not supposed to be 100% accurate to the bible or deviate completely from it, and it's definitely not meant to be offensive to Christians.

You have proved over and over again that you are the one with a severe lack of knowledge about the bible. You have no idea what this writer knows, so who are you to make a judgement call?

    • i'm interested. the first issue is online for free. i found a link at newsarama.com. however, i would not be looking to this comic for anything too theologically accurate. Millar even said in an interview that he didn't even crack open a Bible while writing it. he just did it all from memory of things he had learned as a kid (Millar is a self-proclaimed catholic). this will be pure entertainment and will likely contain some rather controversial lines and panels.

So if this artist is suposed to be a devout Catholic, how come he think's the 'Son of God' from the Bible is a man with a penis between his leg's?, because the "Spirit and the Bride", is a physical female body of flesh with a clit, called a Tomboy/Beaux; so is he that envious he has to go and worship the men wearing dresses out of the ENVY of a Tomboy with tit's!

    • Seems to be a popular trend since there is also a TV show retelling the stories of the biblical King David.

It all depends on how well the stories are done, since the myths have been around for a long time, they usually have themes in them that strike a chord in people.

Marvel’s Civil War, had high production values so I would think that they would get writers and artists that knew a lot about how to make comics that were entertaining.

have you actually read it, or are you really just choosing to call it trash without even looking at it?

if you give things a chance before you judge them, they will most likely surprise you.

i think it looks pretty entertaining...and i am not an athiest. this has the potential to be entertaining to anyone who has an open mind...but judging by the numerous statements that i have seen you make on this website, i would say that you really don't fit into that category...

    • Well, if your expecting a man with a penis between his leg's to fall from the sky, think again, because the true identity of the 'Son of God' from the Bible is in Revelation 22:, "And the Spirit and the Bride saith...", is one physical female wearing a wedding dress with the Spirit, ie; Voice of God, not a physical man at all!.
And sticking the name 'Frankie' on the t-shirt's, highly hipocritical, being that Genesis 1:11; tell's you 'The Herb' is given by God for the use of man, not Science, and the UK's drug offender's get sent to Frank for advise about getting off Cannabis, loool!.

interesting. i have never heard that passage interpreted that way. i always read verse 17 (the Spirit and the Bride say, "come." and let the one who hears say, "come." and let the one who is thirsty come; let the one who desires to take the water of life without price) as the Bride being the church telling Jesus to come soon. this is supported by the context of the following verses and Paul's final statement "come, Lord Jesus".

i'm just curious where you learned your interpretation.

    • The Bible is the most written about book ever, and Jesus is the most written about person ever, (although Obama is trying hard to be number one).
The interesting thing is that when times are bad people turn to religion so the book will sell well.

    • Even though I liked Wanted (the comic), if this hadn't been trying so hard to be cool through being so blatantly controversially motivated, I probably would've taken a gander. I'd rather just read Revelations again instead. The "FRANKIE SAY RELAX" shirt says it all for me. Sometimes you shouldn't try so hard. But to each there own.

I also want to say Wanted had the worlds most unfaithful film adaptation ever.

      Nite y'all!
