According to the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA), worldwide box office takings are up 5.2% in 2008 reaching $28.1bn, dispite the economic downturn.
Dispite prices of tickets up by 4.4% to an average $7.18, admissions were down 2.6% to more than 1.3 billion.

Totally makes sense. Movies did well in the Depression also, both as an escape and as a community release valve. We need them!
