On the "rape" in Observe and Report

Image

Writer Vadim Rizov examines whether or not what goes down between Ronnie (Seth Rogen) and Brandi (Anna Faris) in the dark comedy can be classified as date rape and wonders if there's any way to have a rational and frank discussion of the issue. And why is that scene being singled out when there's no much other bad behavior in the movie?

    • It was singled out because our country is full of uptight, overly sympathetic pussies. It was a movie, nobody's pointing a gun to your head telling you to go see it.

    • I think Brandi saying "Why did you stop?" or something to that effect keeps it from crossing the line to date rape. (A smart move on Hill's part.) But that was the first thing that came to my mind when the scene started -- definitely looked like she was unconscious, and the pillow...

And personally, even though I mention the "date" (hardly counts when someone harasses you until you agree to go) when I talk about the movie, it's just one thing in a long list of Ronnie's ugly or bizarre behavior.

As stunned as I was by the time the film ended, though, I'd be willing to watch it again -- only this time without the idea that it's going to be a typical Seth Rogen comedy as it's so wrongly been advertised.
