This list of movies signifies films that TCM has deemed influential in the arena of film and the culture that produced them. These are not necessarily the most important films, nor representative of “firsts” in film history-these are the movies that shaped the cinema and the audiences that viewed them. On its 15th anniversary, TCM reflects on these titles, many of which are vital examples of the programming that our network has proudly presented to audiences. These films are presented in chronological order.

1. The Birth of a Nation (1915)
2. Battleship Potemkin (1925)
3. Metropolis (1927)
4. 42nd Street (1933)
5. It Happened One Night (1934)
6. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937)
7. Gone with the Wind (1939)
8. Stagecoach (1939)

    • I heard Hitler loved Metropolis, but for reasons other than the obvious fight for freedom and justice. If you can, try to see classic movies on big screen because it's amazing. I saw Citizen Kane on big screen behind a local 1930's theater, and it was soooo cool. The whole list is a great collection of films!

    • Curious, The Birth of a Nation and Battleship Potemkin are the most recognized propaganda films ever made. I guess they worked!

I'm not saying that The Birth of a Nation and Battleship Potemkin don't deserve to be on list. I just think TCM could have expanded the list to more than 15. Blade Runner is great Sci-Fi film and so is 2001: A Space Odyssey yet they don't make the list.

Naked Spur was one of the first Westerns where the lead character was dark and bitter, which changed the way the western hero is perceived. It meant that the audience had more stronger lead characters, rather than happy singing cowboys. Characters such as the man with no name or the Outlaw Josey Wales.

It's just a shame the list is so small because it has left out some of cinema's greatest performances and stories.

    • Metropolis was such a cool movie!
Birth of a Nation was super racist and even revived the KKK during the twenties, but unfortunately it was extremely influential.
