X-Men Origins: Wolverine’ Rips Up Weekend Box Office, Pulls In Estimated $89M

In a development that should only be a surprise to the most devout Matthew McConaughey and Jennifer Garner fans out there, it looks as though comic book films will once again rule the multiplex, as “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” is set to easily take the top spot at this weekend’s box office with an estimated $89M three-day draw, soundly distancing itself from the projected second place earner, McConaughey/Garner’s “Ghost of Girlfriends Past” ($16M).

As with yesterday’s report concerning Friday’s overall take, we remind you that these totals are unofficial estimates as Fox continues to count up the receipts. However, reliable sources close to Deadline Hollywood Daily speculate that, after Friday’s $35M, coupled with a solid $31M pull on Saturday, “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” should top out at $89M once the smoke clears from fans flocking to see Hugh Jackman’s latest stint as Marvel Comics’ cigar-chompin’, shower-drain-cloggin’ badass mutant.

While “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” might not hit the $90M mark (as studio execs had hoped), it did perform well above the “safe bet” of $85M. Clearly, concerns over the Swine Flu scare and a leak of a rough cut of the film weeks prior didn’t hurt the latest installment of the wildly popular “X-Men” film franchise.

Should these numbers pan out, “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” will find itself as the sixth highest opening for a comic book film (right behind “Iron Man“), thus providing a solid kickoff to the summer movie season.

Did you see “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” this weekend? What did you think? Let’s hear some chatter in the comments.

    • I for one liked the move (mostly because of Hugh Jackmans uber muscles) They should have had WAY more deadpool in the movie though; Ryan Renolds is awesome! They better make a badass deadpool spinoff or i will be very sad. And I liked the storyline and character development. Pretty good all around.
