"OldBoy" remake proceeds despite legal scuffle

Steven Spielberg and Will Smith are moving forward with plans for a remake of "Old Boy" despite a complex, behind-the-scenes rights wrangle involving the Japanese publishers of the original manga and the Korean producers of Park Chan-Wook's 2003 cult hit.

Futabasha, publisher of the manga by Nobuaki Minegishi and Garon Tsuchiya, has filed a case against Show East in Seoul, alleging the Korean company never had the right to negotiate a remake.

The issue is further complicated by the fact that Show East has shut down and its CEO, Kim Dong-Ju, has disappeared. Big Egg, a co-producer of the ultra-violent revenge flick, has also closed up shop, and its former staffers are unreachable.

"We haven't been able to confirm that Show East is bankrupt, and at this stage we're not sure what effect this will have on the legal case," said a spokesperson from Futabasha in Tokyo, who noted that legal proceedings had begun last week.

South Korean sales company Cineclick Asia, which represented Show East's "Oldboy" in international territories, actually negotiated the remake deal with Universal.

Universal brought in Roy Lee's Vertigo Entertainment, which has made a specialty of Asian film remakes, to produce the picture, and then Mandate acquired the rights from Universal.

DreamWorks, in one of its first moves in the wake of its November separation from Paramount, secured remake rights from Mandate, which remains involved in the project.

DreamWorks had no comment on the dispute between Futubasha and Show East.

    • I'm definitely going to check out the new film, especially if Will Smith is in it. Sure he's had a few flops but I can't think of an actor who hasn't. It's the name of the game folks.

I've seen the original but I'm even more curious to see just how Steven and Will are going to westernize this flick.

    • Steven, Will, watch this film closely and over and over again, and know you will never be able to touch the original. You will obviously be creating a version of this film for the masses that have never seen the original film, just as Will attempted to do with "I Am Legend", which was an "OK' movie but a far cry from the book. I just don't see what they can do with this story to make it an Amer"I CAN" blockbuster without disappointing followers of the original. By the way PETA would shit a brick if they saw Will Smith eating a live octopus. Thanks the "ruinist" for the reminder of that scene.

    • they probably just mean "remake" in the sense of making it attractive to the west.

      like slumdog millionaire.

p.s. this just gave me a great idea for a lesson plan here in seoul. you rock retro!

    • I'm staring at my copy of "Old Boy" from my Tartan Asia Extreme collection right now, thinking that there is no way that Will Smith will be able to pull-off the same degree of insanity and pain that the main character went through.

I usually dont have anything against Will Smith, but I do think it's the fact that the story is so uique,a nd the way it is shot cannot be duplicated or even modified, as any modification would take away from the eerie feeling that the Korean version provided.

So I'll just say, stick to the Science Fiction Will, and leave the psychological thrillers well alone...same goes to Speilberg.

    • These people need to back the hell off. Oldboy isn't exactly in need of a remake. the acting, writing, and camera work are all top notch and not dated at all (the movie isn't even remotely old"

When I first heard about this I was not impressed. When the legal problems came to light i saw a glimmer of hope, but that appears to be all but gone at this point.

    • I normally never boycott films. Even if they are stupid and horrendously offensive to it's original version, I wouldn't waste time declaring my boycotting a film.
This is the exception for me.
Will Smith, Speilberg, and "OLD BOY"?
Have those two even watched the film?
Do they realize the kind of movie they're going to have to make?
Will Smith probably watched the hammer/hallway scene and was like "Shoot, I can do that"

    • Now this is a story all about how my life got flip turned upside down, Im the only one in this room with wacky ass hair, I laugh and I cry but no one seems to care.

In Seoul South Korea, born n' raised,

In the DMZ is where I spent most of my days,

Chillin' out, maxing, relaxin all cool,

Just taking some photos outside of the school

When a brother and sister who were up to no good

Started making out inside an empty room

They see a little flash of light and they both get scared,

So I tell my best friend and my life starts to get ruined there.

      Moar?

    • I really hope they at least title it something else so that when I mention Oldboy, I don't have to qualify it every time by saying "I mean the original Korean film!"

    • this cannot end well...oldboy does not need to be remade and I don't see how the complex and intricate issues dealt with in the film can translate culturally to the American audience especially with Will Smith attached to the project

    • Max Payne needs a remake, not a genius cult classic like OldBoy. I'm pissed... this is strikingly reminiscent of old record company tactics to remake(steal) songs by black artists back in the day. Will Smith you're on notice.
