Don't just blame poor education for our nation's scientific illiteracy -- but our politics and pop culture

    • Because we focus on english/math/history all throughout school and not as much on science classes. Then we go to college and pick a major that apparently has a lot of emphasis on chemistry and we end up struggling with those type of classes because we've only ever taken one chemistry class in high school years before and all of a sudden we are supposed to be experts on the subject but really we end up failing the classes.
      That's why.

Same shit I said, the people do majors with science are so damns stupid about it that it makes no sense. Like I said $$$ is all that's in their fucking eyes. When you in the lab and some shit blows up in your face, blame yourself for being so science illiterate.

i was lucky enough to go to a great high school (education wise-not people wise :P) and had an awesome chem teacher and lab. Even so, however, a grad student I talked to from Iran said they teach organic chemistry in high school!

Really shows how far behind we are in terms of science... although I'm not sure if I would still have wanted to take the infamous o-chem in high school LOL

    • Does no one remember Billy Nye the Science Guy?
He made science interesting! He was a little weird at times, but still interesting.

Perhaps if teachers would teach with enthusiasm that would be quite helpful... I must say that throughout my delightful public school experience, science teachers showed a particular lack of enthusiasm that many times came off as true boredom.

Oh man!! I love Bill! we watched him all the time in the 4th grade. I agree with you. Hard subjects like science and math should be taught with more enthusiasm and patience.

he had a new show on cable for a while, i guess they ran out of episodes. the beach episode was my favorite.. bill nye and beakman of "beakmans world" as well as my grandpa the physics teacher from depere, wi (who apparently knows everyone) are the ones who piqued my interest in science and learning in general.

      "DID YOU KNOW THAT:

Some germs are good for you, or even delicious? There are more germs on Earth than all other living things combined? Your body is constantly fighting germs, even when you aren't sick?

      NOW YOU KNOW!"

      Bill Nye is awesome.

    • The politics of the religious right embraced by the Bush administration did much damage.

By holding intellectuals in contempt and insinuating that the Bible had some sort of useful information the right wing mounted quite an assault on science and scientists that we are only now beginning to recover from.

The fact that people still try to deny evolution, global climate change, and/or the efficacy of vaccines all point to a large underclass of scientific illiterates.

      @gfletcher

It's because the Christian version of creationism is really the main reason why Americans aren't accepting evolution (even if it's not specifically your reason), however I would like to know if your version has anything to do with intelligent design? If it does, it requires a designer. It might not necessarily be the Christian God, but here in America, that's who most of the intelligent design advocates are - Christians (not that I think all Christians reject evolution). Invoking the bible or some other supernatural force, or being, or magic of some sort is essentially the same thing in that they are equally unscientific.

Statistics show that the more religious a country tends to be, the less likely they are to accept evolution. Some survey a few years back placed the US 32nd out of the 33 countries surveyed in acceptance of evolution. The only country that trailed us was Turkey.

If you are not talking about intelligent design / creationism, then I'm curious what you are talking about... If you wouldn't mind elaborating. I'm not asking you to prove it. I'm just asking what it is.

The damage to the educational system is decades old, going back the 1960s.
While evolution is a theory and global warming morphed into climate change does not make them un-worthy of rational discussion. Rather, these are presented as irrefutable fact, which they are not.
As such, the people who indoctrinate on these topics are new high priests in a new-age religion. Funny how people who dis-believe global warming or evolution are treated like the non-believers of Islam. Perhaps the people who are afraid of discussing such topics should be called the climate change jihadis or evolution mullahs.

Well, the greatest scientific minds didn't come out of Liberty or Regent University, that's for damn sure! Judging from your constant typos and misspellings, you're probably one of their alumni, if you have any education at all.

    • I had read a few articles a while ago about popularity of Criminal Justice studies skyrocketing after CSI became popular. Maybe if we can do the same for other branches of science it would help more?
