    • i knew this was going to be great when i saw the trailer before it came out. you can tell that sean penn is influenced by the the great directors of the 70's...especially terrence malick whom he once told before the thin red line came out, "i be in your next film for a dollar." anyway, i loved this film!

    • It's a pretty good movie but Emile hirsch isn't that great of an actor. He's kind of blah. He was good in the girl next door but I think this was a little over his head. Galifianakis had a great part. Hatchet was sick. The book was great and the movie was too cool(if you like early 90's awesomeness).

    • My son & I watched this film together shortly after it came out on dvd, and I was overwhelmed by it in every way, I remember when Chris M. disappeared, and then later when he died. The movie brought it all back in such a personal way, particularly at that time when I had a teenaged son of my own. This movie celebrates the youth and vigor and optimism and realism and sadness and perversity and frailty and strength of the human spirit. I cried bitter tears watching it, and feeling all the raw, ugly emotion of the tension and rift between the child and the parent...but, at the same time, I found the film so reassuring and beautiful. I've never been able to watch it again---it just seems too hard. But I will never forget it and will always count it as one of my favorite films. Eddie Vedde'rs soundtrack for the film is equally as true and moving. I just listen to the music to remember those hours I spent watching Chris McCandless grow into a man.
