Japanese cult hit Voltron heads to big screen

The producers behind "Get Smart" and "The International" have acquired the rights to make a live-action feature based on the Japanese robot-lion property "Voltron."

Based on Japanese anime properties Beast King GoLion and Kikou Kantai Dairugger XV, "Voltron" features a "Transformers"-like conceit, in which a band of five robot-lions combine to form one super lion. A group of five pilots control the lions, which are charged with defending the planet Arus from villain King Zarkon, who dispatches evil creatures called Robobeats to fight the Voltron robots.

"Voltron" aired on U.S. television in 1984 and 1985. Since then, the property has remained a favorite in diverse communities, from the fanboy to the hip-hop worlds.

    • Next thing we know they'll just grab a 7 year old, rummage through his toybox, and make a movie out of whatever toys they find. It'll be something along the lines of Catwoman and Luke skywalker vs the Deceptacons or giant Cyclops and spiderman fight dracula, Boba Fett, Lego Pirates, and Godzilla. Coming soon to a theater near you! Man is it sad to watch creativity die. Can we stimulate the Movie industry so i don't have to watch this crap anymore?

    • If this was done in the same style as Speed Racer, I might check it out. Don't get me wrong though, I have zero hope for this project.

    • I don't think producing Get Smart or The International lends any cred. I basically watched the International for the Guggenheim fight, and Get Smart is an entertaining, but not really great comedy. So... how do those translate into a movie about lion-tank-things that become a giant robot?

    • Do they really have to make a movie out of Voltron? It's gonna Sucks especially if the CGi is as bad as the Transformers. What I mean is that it looks like a bunch of metal shards put together instead of the blocky robots we were used to. EHHHH!!

      NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

    • hardly anyone I talk to in Japan knows about the show. I think it had more of a cult following in the states. I've never seen any voltron-related stuff here unlike their countless other anime stuff.

    • I could be wrong about this, but people only assume the worst for these things because of nostalgia. "Hey, I loved that when I was a kid! They can't eff my childhood in the ay like that! *angry face*" Well, you were a kid back then and your taste in stuff probably sucked because, you know, kids typically have bad taste in everything. We attach certain memories to things and pretty much dare people not to mess with that. Which is why I think that a large percentage of people hated Transformers. Cartoon you loved + Fond childhood memories + Director you hate = Something new to bitch about.

Whatever, that's enough of that. I'm going to go out on a limb and say I think this movie can work and I can't wait to see how it turns out.

    • Although I hated the cartoon (I've never seen anime I liked), I got a lot of play out of this toy back in the day. I can't say I'm either here or there on a movie version of Voltron, though. I'm not that much emotionally attached to this particular product.

I am, however. still mourning Transformers, and GI Joe looks like it's going to suck, too. I'm sure He-Man, Heathcliff, Plastic Man, and ThunderCats will inevitably suck as well. Thereby, my entire childhood will have been whored out by Hollywood. What a sad ending to such a wonderful time.

Don't forget the Failures that were the X-men movies. WOW as a huge X-men fan I was pissed at the movies. They didn't even have custom costumes.

For GI-Joe man I'm scared for that as well.

    • NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

This is almost as scary as when I heard they wanted to to make a Battle Of The Planets live action flick.

The damage they would do to this would be horrid. Can you imagine a big budget film with the production value of a Power Rangers movie???

Quick, if four more noooo posts are made we can form into one giant nooooo post fused with the mystic energies of the universe capable of preventing this live action travesty and or a giant robotic humanoid capable of wantonly destroying tall buildings.
