Ebert talks about the problem of the lack of effectiveness for word-of-mouth, but there's always been the group of five friends standing in front of the cineplex wondering what starts soonest and what they should see. You can stand there and tell them how The Hurt Locker is the best American film and moves past its war setting to speak on more universal themes, but they'll just stare and say "Yeah, but is it, like, any good?"

My appreciation for the art form of movies has dwindled over the years. Sometimes I subscribe to theory of 90% of everything (art form) is crap.
Ebert's ramblings, which I agree are indeed ramblings, speak to the ability of movies to speak to the masses. His proclamation that we are entering a dark ages of culture due to the fact this "90%" is successful, may be overreaching a bit or maybe its not.
The problem I have with current movies is the constant rehashing and remakes. Lets see some new ideas and themes.

Interesting read, though I hate to say that the trends Ebert is describing in his editorial have been going on for more than a while now and will definitely continue.
Still, it was somewhat refreshing to see that brand of honesty from a film critic.
