The role of improvisation in Cassavetes' films is frequently misunderstood. His films were — with the exception of the original version of Shadows — heavily scripted. Confusion arises in part because Cassavetes allowed actors to bring their own interpretations of characters to their performances. Performances were scripted, but delivery was not.

Even though TEMPEST is directed by Paul Mazursky, it's still worth checking out. Finally available on DVD: http://www.cduniverse.com/productinfo.asp?pid=7360665

he was the great one...even more than an extra large coffee at dunkin donuts. perhaps filmmakers claim that they were influenced by him but i don't see it in their films. you can't copy that.
thanks for the post!

Incredible filmmaker - the source of greatness. Influenced the many waves that went after him in American cinema. I have his boxset but sadly Minnie and Moskovitz wasn't included.
I'd love to catch this sometime.
