I can see what you're saying and I have no intention on arguing for or against it, but in all reality, it's a movie loosely based off a toy line. A toy line. Some things you just gotta let go.

Has Anyone seen any James Bond movies lately? Talk about the hatred of women. He's either beating the women or "sexing" the women.

You have to understand the target audience here: Juveniles that are just getting into the whole macho-machismo ideology and think of everything around them as toys (women included) or adults that never grew out of that phase in development.

I do agree there is a double standard:
If a woman is hot, then she is being "unfairly sexualized"
But if a male lead is hopped up on steroids and is impossibly good looking, then no one cares and/or thinks its INSPIRATIONAL!
"He's strong! Guys will want to be like that and it will encourage them to work out!"
Or just start juicing.
The problem is that any depiction of "beauty" in the movies is now decried as "over sexualization"
So...the only "proper" way to display female charcaters in any action movie is to make them a) slightly overweight and b) they must all be geniuses c) all virgins d) be smarter then men in every scene or else they are being unfairly portrayed as just sex objects.
Aren't women being just a little unrealistic in their demands for parity here?
Should the Baroness really be 5'1 and 250 pounds? Is that what it takes to send a "girl positive" message to young viewers that "physical apperances don't matter and you can still be a world class super villian despite morbid obesity and early onset diabetes?"
Would that even make any sense in the context of the movie?
Should Snake Eyes really be 5'2 and 472 pounds....just to ensure that we don't encourage young boys not to do steroids or send dis-empowering messages about "mythical" male beauty?

crob80227:
Jammer has such a weird world view. You are influenced by the media you watch. There is no way around that. Media is pervasive, and subtle and grabs at your very hopes and dreams. If you spent your whole life watching one of your dreams fulfilled time and time again in the media (like, say marrying a prince) and another one of your dreams mocked and ridiculed (like being a smart woman) which dream do you think would last?
Seriously, Jammer, what is your dream? Think about how the media's focus on beautiful people has altered your dream. Here you are in a chat room, without a true face, hassling all these nice people. Was this what you dreamed about as a young man? Or did you hope that people would love you and hold you up and celebrate you? At some point you lost that dream and this is what you are left with now. How much of your life, do you think, is the result of you and everyone you know being told time and time again that beautiful people should be celebrated, not ugly ones?

What is with all the psychobabble?
Intemedation?
Nice. A movie about a toy has caused you to think in profound ways or is this more of a way to think you're thinking in profound ways?
I do understand that we are shaped by what we watch. There was nothing I stated that would indicate otherwise.
My problem with people on this thread is their inability to realize what the movie is and what it is not. What you wanted it to be is IMPOSSIBLE because it NEVER was that...not even when it was in someone's head did that guy think, "I wonder how this will make girls feel in the year 2009." No.
Toys like this were for boys.
Girls got dolls. They were not thinking about how to please women.
And the actresses in this film were not going "Oh let me take on this part because it objectifies me."
Why did they not think that? Because the roles DO NOT DO THAT. The roles are strong ones. I suppose you would have been more pleased with them being paper pushers and getting coffee instead of going out and getting their dresses dirty?
Film critics (for the most part...even those that don't get paid) are so jaded that they fail to realize why a film was created and YES that matters. if it was created to entertain or inform matters.
GI JOE was made to entertain not to be a role model for females that the toys were NEVER intended for. Be grateful they even had female characters to begin with.

Unfortunately my kids learn about life from all the various TV shows and movies they are exposed to. No way around that. And it will probably take about 1,000 Nancy Drew mysteries to offset the damage done by a single G.I. Joe flick.
If you found yourself responsible for a young mind I think you would be more concerned with the crap that it gets exposed to. And let's just say that my daughter can process out the endless, pointless misogyny that is baked into film today. Unfortunately she'll be in class with a room full of boys that may not be able to do the same. We're training our youth to be morons, and the few that are able to break free of this programming are going to be held back by the morons that aren't.

I don't know why Jammer keeps going on about people ignoring the plot of G.I. Joe, or that we're somehow generalizing the film. Maybe I can answer that issue now by saying there was no plot, really. 4 bombs are created at the beginning of the film, and over the course of 2 hours the bad guys try to set off the bombs. That's not really a plot, that's a dramatic device. A plot involves character motivation, and the only motivation that G.I. Joe seems to have is to join the military so he can "be on the ground, in the fight".
I don't know how to break this to the nation's teens without sounding harsh, so I'll just come out and say it. Joining the military has NOTHING to do with fighting "on the ground". Less than 1% of your time will be spent with your rifle pointed at a "bad guy" (in most cases it will be 0%). Instead you'll be cleaning things, running around in circles and eating 3 meals a day at taxpayer expense. And believe me, taxpayers don't pay for fine dining. It's more like being trapped in a McDonald's than the fantasy depicted in G.I. Joe.

It's rather simple....
...GI JOE was a cartoon. It is not like you couldn't find out what it was about prior to seeing the film. There is probably videos on YOUTUBE that you could have watched.
You made the choice to see it. Why? What made you think that it would be good for young women (of course this is based on your thinking not mine for I went with a young woman and she did not have a problem with it at all.)?

On another note I want to point out in the 80's cartoon, EVERYONE knew who the GI Joes where. Because American's knew that Cobra was the evil enemy and the real American Heroes where the conquering heroes. And after the Joes conquered the Cobra's daily world domination plan. The Joes came back to the US of A and taught kids safety lessons. Because knowing is half the mother !@#$ing battle!
Quick question: I have not seened the movie, and still stand on boycotting it entirely. But do they say "knowing is half the battle anywhere?"

Well I don't really have the time to watch every movie made. Especially when I already watch 3 or 4 movies a day. And the GI Joe movie looks nice and flashy but it is just very low on the list. Boycotting is too strong of term. I was being unfair when I typed that. Besides I know in the end a year from now I will be at a friend's house and some bastard will say "Hey I got GI Joe we should watch it" then I will probably drink a stiff drink while drifting in and out during the fight scenes. Just like how I got threw both Transformer movies. Because the fact is. If the movie has a sword fight. I will end up seeing it. Because sword fights are badass.

Almost every show, movie, and game in the last decade features at least one good looking women in a tight outfit. Large useless men stand her around in massive armor. Despite the fact that they wear massive armor they die off quickly while the half naked woman is killing everyone. This scenario is well traveled, and it won't be ending any time soon. Which is sad. Things can have sex, things can have action and sex, but for some reason no one is willing to just make action. Which would stand out more then everyone competing to flash the hottest chick in the tightest outfit.

That review was bad on so many levels and the main level is the level that totally ignores why and how stories are created and that is through different kinds of characters.
Not all females have to be the strong females. Not all males have to be the caring ones or the ones that open doors or the ones that do anything but what the writer dictates....
I would like to know, original poster, what you think is a great character that does not exhibit this mythological female you created in your head thinking that said female would make all females feel empowered?

J_Jammer:
First off, thanks for the great interaction Jammer. I may not agree with you but I appreciate all the comments!
The reason I wanted to speak up is that the female characters in this film are so dysfunctional, so over-the-top incomplete. One female character (Scarlett, the smart one) has no emotions at all. I guess too many big smart thoughts got into her brain and pushed all the emotions out. Another character, G.I. Joe's wife, got mad once and so of course she had to switch sides and plot to destroy the world.
The women are depicted as empty shells, just waiting for a man to fill them up. I hope my daughter never sees anything like this in her lifetime. I want her to know that she can be both smart and emotional. And I also want her to know that it's OK to be mad at your husband from time to time, and not be worried that she'll be cast as a villian.
I want my daughter to know that emotions are an important and healthy component of her life, and I don't think she's going to get that from G.I. Joe. I mean, the guy literally has a shoot out with his wife. The guy has issues.

This movie is based on a cartoon. That cartoon is based on a toy and that toy was created to inspire love for the military.
Substance is already lacking, as one could see.
But the movie had more substance than the cartoon ever did and far more character as well. The females were not hollow. The Baroness was bad because Duke did not protect her brother and in turn she became frustrated. But they took over her and controlled her via a substance. What one should learn from that is anger and bitterness can be controlling and take over your life leaving you with no more than you had before and maybe even less.
As for Scarlett she was found that love did nothing for her and decided it was best to rely on things that she were sure of and that would be logic and numbers....
I understand wanting great role models for your daughter, but a movie that is based on an action figure from the 1950's (if I'm not mistaken) is just not going to be that....women weren't even part of that line up then.

GI Joe is just a two hour Pentagon recruitment ad. So yeah, military guys treat women like shit.
The industry seems to be more and more steeped in business plans that have little to do with writing talent. It's about marketing what can be made into a video game and can be marketed on an international scale, and what can have a music component like sound track hits, for example. These Hollywood industries like GE, which owns Universal along with a plethora of other mostly finance industry companies, see movies as a small part of their big corporate Wall Street picture, little more than add placement opportunities, if you will. In this regard, Transformers is a two hour Camaro commercial. GI Joe is a Pentagon recruitment ad. Transformers too, considering all the pro military tripe it espouses. After all, Transformers' director Michael Bay started out making commercials.

"I never realized why they hated me so much, then now i realized why.
For those soldiers, women that are in the intelligence group must be a whore that goes in bed with them because mostly they have plenty of women beside their bed sleeping with sexual intercourse. Those who follow them betray their country and sabotage many innocent lives and uses the name of their Government even in stealing lands and money inside the bank.
Now i remember one of them have plenty of girls even high school students have sexual intercourse with them and help them sabotage those who know what they are doing.
The mere fact that Citizen Armed Forces Geographical Unit members did not noticed that i worked with those people who can destroy their credibility as long as that we have concrete evidences against them.
Realizing that those men (soldiers and CAFGU) hated me not being their mistress nor sell drugs like those young girls who slept with them and sabotage the children of those rich and wealthy private people.
Now i remember more why they hated me most because i help the children of rich and private people to escaped from those prostitution and drug syndicates when i am young at age fourteen year old because of my friend who work with me being an intelligence."-Jane K. Bond

Is this really only a problem for female characters?? The men definitely aren't average either. It's a double standard, "dont over sexualize the women", but its okay for all the men to be hardbodies?
Its just the movies, things are exaggerated to have more of a "wow" factor. IMO it's nothing worth worrying too much about.

Ugly is a subjective term. To me, stupid is ugly. Personally I would prefer the female characters in movies be average looking smart girls than beautiful idiots. In the case of GI Joe, however, it is based on a toy line in which every character is a prime physical specimen, not just the women. At the same time, I understand how women feel. How would you feel if the role was reversed?

I must agree. Though it is empowering for women to be dipicted as tough, kick-bums in film, it seems that women have little to no roles in Sci-Fi or Video game-based media unless they are blessed in the bust/bum department. Does a female have to be a sex-symbol to be a strong character? I don't mind if a beautiful actress is picked to play a role, but don't over-sex them up!

Actors have a terrible habit. They like to eat. In order to eat they have to work. Sometimes being a working actor in the US means taking "unsavory" roles, especially if you are a minority. Think about all the black actors who've had to build their careers out of playing gangsters and pimps or the Asian actors who've had to play overachieving nerds, bucktoothed comic relief, or martial artists. What about the Hispanic actors relegated to "lazy Mexicans" and Latin lovers? What about all of the Arab actors who've paid rent playing terrorists or Germans who've had to play NAZIs?
