"Inglorious is definitely not the word used to describe this movie. Equal parts western, war film and historical drama (and with touches of revenge film and food porn), Inglourious Basterds can be described as epic, violent, insane, ballsy and even righteous. And if you got down with Tarantino Fest '09 as suggested, you would see where all the pieces fall into place with this film.

Quentin Tarantino loads up on the Ennio Morricone music cues and goes to town. The opening scene at a lone farmhouse in 1940's Nazi-occupied France is shot like a Sergio Leone film and ends with a punchline that'll reverberate through the rest of the story. In this scene we meet one of our heroines, Shosanna Dreyfus (Mélanie Laurent), as well as the main villain of the movie, Col. Hans Landa (Christoph Waltz). Sure, Hitler and Nazis in general are the villains of the story, but Col. Landa gets all the best scenes as one of the top detectives employed by the SS."

    • Another jew's opinion - this was a fantastic movie. Check your adult, mature, jewish self at the door and enter the childhood revenge fantasy you've always had.

The visceral thrill I was left with was fantastic - albeit leaving a fair amount of guilt once I reencountered my adult self. This movie did exactly what my id wanted it too - I just had to ignore my superego for the whole time. ;)

If you're a Jew who has forgotten how to enjoy a simple ride through something you've secretly wanted for years, skip it.

If you're a non-Jew looking for a Tarantino film that is so Tarantino it is almost painful, go for it. Watch the subtitles for some clever fun.

    • i've been so excited to see this... but i have to admit i do hae a nagging fear in the back of my mind that it won't move beyond, semi-adequate... its something abouth those movies that are a director's life long work... they can just end up being so inaccessable to the audience :(

    • It was adequate. I think it's more of a stay at home and rent movie considering the fact that it was exceedingly long. The acting was, alright. The best character in my opinion was "The Jew Hunter" - this coming from a Jew. There was too much dialogue, more than one story line going at once - and an ill thought cameo via Mike Myers. The theater was ...so very quiet, only perhaps 10 chuckles throughout the entire movie. The end is worth it though, and trust me - it's not historically accurate. All in all, I enjoyed it and the story lines were fantastic albeit a little haphazard. Still, I'd rather have watched it from the comfort of my couch than in a crowded movie theater.
