YouTube and the care and feeding of fat kids

YouTube made a big splash this week with a Time Warner deal that promises to bring *something* to the site. But what are they really getting out of the deal? And what does this mean to the fat kid with a lightsaber and the fat kid singing Numa Numa? Has YouTube given up on the care and feeding of fat kids? Will the fat kids battle it out in gladiatorial combat for the remaining crumbs?

And plus, they make plenty of money just off all the advertisements and would just be foolish to make it ppv. Facebook is worth what...a billion or two still? Probably more..

Thanks for the comment Jammer. I agree it's going to be very, very hard to get people to start paying for something that's so easy to deliver for free.

The odd thing is that YouTube used to be the premier place to see pretty good, free video. But now that they are abandoning that advantage, and moving toward Hollywood content, there will be fewer places to find great, free content.

So while it may be easy to set one of these sites up, it turns out that the temptation of Hollywood is too much to resist. These sites never really wanted to do free content in the first place, it seems.

    • I know the picture for this article is a little orthogonal to the story. But Time Warner owns the Harry Potter franchise, and the press release regarding the YouTube / Time Warner deal was rife with overstatement and hype. So the picture kinda makes sense in that regard.
