A French filmmaker who made a documentary about gangs in El Salvador has been shot dead on a road near the capital, police said.

The body of Christian Poveda, 54, was found on Wednesday in El Rosario county along with documents he was carrying close to his vehicle, a National Civil Police spokesman told AFP.

President Mauricio Funes said he was "dismayed" by the photographer and journalist's killing, which he "strongly condemned."

The Central American leader called on authorities to "conduct all necessary investigations so that those responsible are brought to justice". He called on the country to unite to "combat together" the scourge of violence hitting El Salvador.

Poveda, police say, was on his way back from filming in gang-controlled La Campanera, a poor suburb north of San Salvador.

The French-Spanish journalist has published reports in numerous journals including The New York Times, Le Monde, El Pais, Paris Match and Stern, mostly on Latin American affairs.

His documentaries have been broadcast around the world and featured at film festivals.

One of his most recent documentaries, "La Vida Loca" (2008), followed the Mara 18 gang of heavily tattooed Salvadoran youths who engage in drug trafficking and extortion.

Salvadoran journalists expressed outrage at the killing. "It is a sad loss. The cruel hand of violence has taken him from us," said Juan Jose Dalton of the Foreign Correspondents Association of El Salvador.

    • I'm Salvadorean.. It IS truly sad how as many say, gangs are so out of control & not just in my country but many others including ours ("Gang Land"-hello!)..I just hope that new President Mauricio Funes makes El Salvador proud & does something to get rid of these merciless creatures along with the corrupt officials that support their idiotic selfless crimes! My heart goes out to the family of Mr. Poveda..Journalists do the extreme to feed us the info noone else (Governments!) will tell us & turn their heads to.. They drive the necessary attention.. God Bless.

    • ~ A Passion for the Truth and a Passion for Understanding ~

There is so much Ignorance in the world, and also here at home in the USA. Where we all share the basic freedom to do as we choose. That's what freedom is... having a choice. That is our American shared reality and, our birth-right. But, the world is much larger and much more diverse than only "one reality". Everyplace you go on this planet there are many many versions of reality. It is easy to throw out opinions about everything in life, with no need to care or even understand about people or what really goes on over that horizon. To some... the only thing that they ever had a passion for... is getting drunk on the weekends. But, that's their choice, and their reality. That's all part of the choices that you, me and every one of us make as we all exercise our freedom. "It is all good."

There are some of us out here... that can see further than the next "Twelve Pack". There are some of us that have passion for people and and a passion in sharing those untold stories of people as they struggle to survive in their own version of reality!

Christian Poveda, was one person of those people who's gift... was having that great passion. Passion to see into the lives of each of every person around him and his deep passion to share those untold stories and, those often chilling realities with all of us. Isn't that what "Current Tv" is about? Having that passion to share the truth and what is in the hearts of other people? To educate all of us to all realities of life just over the horizon outside of our safe zone.

His passion was to share his vision with all of you... His gift to you was a gift of understanding of compassion and discovery and of Reality. Capturing windows into the lives of the less fortunate, the forgotten and the hopeless and beyond. So, that we all could, see more.... and understand more... and be more human.

That was Christian Poveda's gift to all of us.

Our growth as people is fed from an understanding of all people. A bond with each other, a responsibility to our planet to do the right thing... We owe it to our neighbors to look through their eyes at their perspective of the world for a while... Because maybe we all could learn a little more about ourselves.

Thank you Christian, for sharing your passion your work and most of all... your courage with all of us

"Cowards die many times before their deaths; The valiant never taste of death but once."
      ~ William Shakespeare ~

    • Regardless of how risky journalist's and their behavior may be, their intentions are for the best.

This is truly a sad story indeed.

My condolences to those who put their lives on the line to raise and document awareness on crucial issues that are easily overlooked by millions otherwise.

Too bad about those backpackers, but backpack a couple of blocks by my house and I can't guarantee the same thing won't happen to you there.

Nothing is for not unless it serves a purpose, and if Poveda's story ended in his OWN death, then that in itself raises the key point which he had initially set out to make.

    • Play with fire, you're gonna get burned. Like those goofball kids who "wandered" into Iraq. (Great place to take a hike! - right on the Iran/Iraq border!) Or the 2 esteemed Current journalists wandering near the DMZ zone. Are journalists really that idiotic? Apparently so. Some places you need to stay the hell out of. Journalists feel this common sense rule doesn't apply to them.

    • so rawtry ...you believe sending more weapons and ammo will solve the problem?...druglords and war mongers are the ones who send americas children to protect their product, soldiers are like pawns ...the first to get taken out.sure cry for them but cry for the innocent who get cuaght in the crossfire...most american soldiers have no freaking idea why they are killing these people....no idea at all....i feel relieved that not too many people think like you do...you must have voted for Bush the Terrible too.
