    • this is a lackluster movie taken from a captivating book. it should have been an easy adaptation, but Hollywood managed to screw it up anyway.

    • 9 -What do you give up seeing a movie, $12.50, 2 hours? Was it worth it? I think so. It had problems but they all do. If I made this movie I would have been happy.

    • my first review:

lack of realistic detail, a lot of typical "crime-thriller" elements.

save your money, unless you have coupons, save your time for a more interesting life experience :]

    • This is my first time submitting. Kind of a "test run" if you will. Hopefully my review skills will improve...as well as the movies I review...because 9 was awful.

    • Toy Story + Terminator 2 = 9

I say Terminator 2 specifically because that is my fave in the series and 9 has a pretty badass girl doll that saves the other dolls butts, not unlike Sarah Connor.

    • I have mixed feelings about 9, primarily sucky ones. This video documents those feelings. PS: I just lost my movie-review-virginity (ie this is my first ever review on tape)!

    • 9: Take equal portions of Lord of the Rings with a Terminator/Matrix blend and add a dash of Coraline since they are dolls. Sit through it for approximately 90 minutes and you will be left with a story that feels vague and stale but looks great! ;-)

    • Mike Johnston: I just found it difficult to connect with the movie because the characters are so one-dimensional. I'm okay with really bleak movies, but I just found it difficult to care what was going on because the characters didn't have any personality.

    • When did September 11th become okay to release movies on again? Did I miss the memo that I should not have a direct link in my brain between the words "September 11th" and 3,000 people dying in an instant a fucking skyscraper fell down on them?

    • I think that there could be a much better discussion of the movie "9" if we included some psychological musings. Almost all of the reviews posted here so far are revolving around a common theme; great animation but story line is lacking.

So the question would be, what is the fundamental thing that is lacking? I think that it is hard for people to identify with this movie because it lacks hope. Humanity is gone. There is no salvation. There is no starting over.

Another disturbing subconscious realization is that, given the state of the world in the movie, maybe it is better if we don't start over. Maybe it would have been better if the rag dolls or the Machine hadn't been created to perpetuate the mistakes made by their former masters.

Those questions are the ones that nobody is talking about and yet I think they are the central theme to the movie. You can't necessarily evaluate a movie that raises such existential questions without including a discussion of those questions in your review. If you do it is like you missed the whole point of the movie.

    • Mike_Johnston:

      mike,

sounds like you've written a great post apocalyptic film there. you should have suggested it to 9.

you're evaluation is condescending and has no basis in the movie itself. You raise questions that are suggested with any "the world is doomed and it's our fault" movie. That fact is that those things are not really explored and it is based around the terrible plot, bad dialogue, and one dimensional characters.

      ...Now who missed the point.

    • Mike_Johnston:

hmmm, Now you missed my point lol

I wasn't suggesting that those themes were presented in the movie in a black and white fashion and that lack of direct reference is what makes for good discussion.

I was basing my comments on the way that people were reviewing the movie. All of the reviews pivot on very simple observations; visually entertaining, story is vague.

My point was to look beneath the story line and talk about WHY the movie made you feel a certain way or didn't.

Most post apocalypse movies have hope as a central component of the story. Some examples would be the Matrix (of course), Star Wars, Battlestar Galactica, etc. Even movies like Planet of The Apes and Enemy Mine have that feature of hope or starting over as a central plot point.

So how do you involve an audience emotionally when there is no hope left?

    • Mike_Johnston:

no you still don't get it

      a. of course the themes are there. any idiot can make a end of humanity movie and subtly suggest those things, but there is no intelligent or unique commentary on them.

      b. did you see the ending? the glow of the ghosts is the same as the glow in the rain. suggesting that life will slowly be restored to the earth from the one man who did have hope for humanity.

      c. why should we care about any of those things when the movie blew.

what else do you want? do you want me to rewrite the movie

      i never miss the point

    • Mike_Johnston:

ok, I didn't mean to be insulting so plz don't take it that way. Just throwing out a different perspective.

Everyone seems to agree the animation was top notch and major media reviews seems to echo the sentiments expressed here here in that respect.

Can people get behind a movie in which they don't get an emotional payoff in the end? A suggestion of a restarting of "life" is not like salvation or redemption for the human race. So would people be reviewing it differently if the movie had given them a different ending?

    • Mike_Johnston:

this is my last time trying this with you.

most importantly: yes if the movie had a different ending the review would be different, but it's not, so we won't.

secondly: it is redemption of humanity. the scientist is a human. it was always his plan for the earth to be rejuvenated with the energy he puts in the dolls. generic movies have bastardized any concept over and over again it's that one human can stand up and shine for the hope of all humanity.

the movie sucked though. end of it/

    • I had high hopes for 9. It had a really nice trailer, with a really slick look and some good music. It gave no indication of plot or dialogue, which should have been a warning.

    • A review of 9. I just saw this movie. Really, it was on TV and it was called The Matrix. If it had been a rip-off of Nightwatch or Daywatch or Wanted animated, I would have been much happier. Next time, crank the amp to 11.

    • A Film Review set in a Post-Apocalyptic Setting for the Post-Apocalyptic WWII Era Sci-Fi Animation rip-off of the Matrix: 9. Don't spend $10 to learn that Dictators do evil things with technology. As a toy franchise it's ok. As a movie vehicle for those toys, completely unoriginal.

Interesting review. Creative. Slightly over long but probably the best review of "9" so far just because of presentation as opposed to content...lol

    • Whiteout: So bad it's bad. But a nice Beckinsale ass shot, as if Sena's apologizing for her character fluctuating between being retarded and a genius. (Mostly retarded.)
