Larry Gelbart, the Emmy-winning and Oscar-nominated writer-producer, died today in Beverly Hills at the age of 81. Best known for co-writing the long-running comedy series M*A*S*H (Emmy winner for writing in 1974), Gelbart also cowrote the Broadway musical A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum (music by Stephen Sondheim) and the hit movie Tootsie (Oscar nominee for Original Screenplay in 1983). Gelbart's long TV career included working with Bob Hope, Sid Caesar, Red Buttons, Mel Brooks, and Neil Simon. And although he's inextricably linked with M*A*S*H, he only wrote for the series for the first four of its 11 years.
