Many may not have seen this... A definite classic of kung-fu cinema!
Chinese handling of Western familiar mythological terms can be vastly different from what we’re used to. This weeks movie is a good example of that.
A CHINESE GHOST STORY
What does demonic ghosts, forbidden love, super hero Taoists, rock video musical numbers, tax collectors, vampires, and evil tree spirits all have in common? They’re all included in “A Chinese Ghost Story.”
I’m not going to deconstruct the plot. What I mentioned above A Chinese Ghost Story is pretty much all one needs to know. A tax collector comes to a small village and ends up spending time in a haunted temple where he falls in love with a beautiful ghost. The ghost is the slave of an evil tree spirit to which she is bound for eternity. The tax collector also meets a Taoist Swordmaster/Magician who helps him out.
