"NEW YORK (AdAge.com) -- Have branded websiodes become the new indie film studios? For actress Illeana Douglas and her celebrity friends such as Keanu Reeves and Justine Bateman, Swedish furniture store Ikea has become their latest production partner.
"Easy To Assemble," a web series created, written by and starring Ms. Douglas, had its debut last fall as a marketing experiment for Ikea and a passion project for the actress. In the series, Ms. Douglas plays a fictionalized version of herself -- a popular indie actress who attempts to flee the Hollywood scene by taking a job at a local Ikea, only to find it riddled with other hard-up-for-work actors such as Ms. Bateman, Ed Begley Jr., Kevin Pollak and Jeff Goldblum." more @ link

this is embarrassing. and certainly not "independent film." this sort of thing makes me extremely uncomfortable - that we are integrating - or rather - that we have integrated capitalism and branding this deeply into our human experience. If you check out the comments at the link, you'll see that the ad and marketing folks are very happy about this sort of thing. This system is not sustainable and thankfully, it will soon collapse or reinvent itself.

I don't know, from what I've seen with the indie film industry lately, they're stuck in a major rut, and I've scene quite a few good internet series, most of them machinimas or related to video games in some way, but they're still pretty good. But I am against those shows that are basically one big advertisement.

Yes, we need more QUALITY webisodes and less advertising.
As if the ads on the sides of our screens, the ones that pop up early on through the video, and commercials that delay our visual enjoyment 15 to 30 painful seconds wasn't enough!
