What the F*CK is Twitter?

Leah_Goudsmit
My short documentary on the upcoming development and popularity of social networking via the internet. How twitter for example influences human connections, interactions, and relationships. OH and I added some amazing and hilarious old archive on communication and friendship.

    • i wanted this video to be more critical of twitter and the narcissism of the hollow people who swear by it. but it turns out it might as well have been a twitter promotional video.

    • Twitter is so borrring, though... if I followed someone famous or important, they'd update 40 times a day and I'd never see my friends. If I only followed my friends, I'd check the site and only see an update once every 4 days.

    • this is so much less about twitter and a lot more about communication. I think twitter shouldn't even be in the title or text cards or intro.

    • I follow other people. When I update my status, it's usually either in response to other people, or to update my FB since it's linked. I view it more as a communication and networking tool than a way to seek attention. Something like twitter, especially mobile, is a way to sustain weak links which otherwise might die off, and allows you to propose get-togethers or other ideas in real-time. In this way it can enhance the IRL social experience.

      A couple hours to spare on campus? Tweet that you want to hang out. See something awesome at the store? Tweet a pic to tell your friends. Find yourself in a crisis situation? Tweet to alert your loved ones. After all--you can only call people one at a time, but you can tweet everyone at once. It's a more efficient way of keeping in-touch; it adds to the functions of texting and IMing.

      In the future I wouldn't be surprised to see audio tweets sent from phones, automatically transcribed to text like how Google Voice does it. Imagine holding a button on your phone and saying something, the message immediately going to all your friends' phones. Imagine hearing audio updates via an earbud from your friends throughout the day, or text transcriptions when you want to keep things hush. I think that's the future.

    • Danger Dodgers! Best part, BTW... we are all basically tweeting right now.

      After Augmented Reality becomes ingrained in social interaction we'll come back to reality.

      Want an overlay of collective info layered over your current reality, well there's an app for that. Want reality to be your only reality, well I'd suggest you stop talking smack about the Internet on the Internet.

      Twitter hatred is like hating the rain or the sunshine, our race uses these things to evolve.

      Yes I just compared Twitter to sunshine and rain. If people weren't aloud to develop new technologies like Twitter, only then would you see true boredom. And it would look something like a renaissance fair, lol.

      I still ask people what they've been up to. I'm not an uber stalker like that.
      ~~~
      If people are really that bored with their lives... why not find something better to do? Sure, sitting around and reading a textbook or going out for some small exercise isn't available to everyone, but at least prepare for that boredom with something more intellectually beneficial?
    • Twitter's original purpose (egotistical, narcissistic blabber about the mundane tasks of celebrities and friends) isn't the only way it's used. I use it specifically for Current: promoting stories, groups, other members, and getting news from other Currentians. I've even managed to scrape a few friends from following funny people and getting followed.
      And how we can forget Twitter's role in Tehran during the riots? #CNNFail
      agreed!!
      ...i've seen major stories come up on twitter (re: mj death, earthquakes, etc.) and then come up on cnn 4 hours later...
      if people don't care, or hate on it... it's fine...but it's like everything else in life, you can get out what you put in...
      Why is that, exactly? I get a lot of use out of Twitter... breaking news, interesting links, a chuckle from a funny friend's tweet. I think people who think Twitter is evil and for stupid people don't understand how it works or the potential value.
