Physics proves the mall is the best zombie hideout after all

A new paper from Davide Cassi at the Università di Parma, published this month in Physical Review E, explores how targets might be annihilated by "random walkers." These walkers might be any moving organism that can eliminate a target, but LiveScience notes that zombies are the perfect analogy for these "walkers" — organisms that meander without purpose and destroy any human they happen to come across.
The paper examines the likelihood of the targets surviving — that is, never coming into contact with these "random walkers" — if they remain immobile within various types of structures. One of Cassi's findings is that the more complex the hideout, the less likely a random walker is to encounter a target. This means that hiding out in a building filled with twisting corridors, such as a mall or a school, offers a better chance of survival than hiding out in the open or in more open structures.
Of course, all bets are off if your particular breed of zombie has a talent for sniffing out live humans — or if it's driven by an instinctive need to shop.

CASINOS are where the well armed survivors TRASH the zombies! Send the "bait" in to compulsively "thrash about" within the labyrinth of machines and tables,...then set the whole damn thing on fire! (Free Drinks)

Wrong. Wrong.
Malls are designed specifically for access: customers should be able to enter from any side easily and get to where they want to go, and impulsively so. Even worse would be casinos: designed to be as difficult to leave as possible. This means the zombies will get in but be very hard to get out.
Personally, I go for the oil derricks offshore: a high ground that is escapable in any direction and nearly impossible to get to for an unconscious being.

Why hide at the mall in the event of a zombie apocalypse? You would miss out on all the fun.
Give me a baseball bat and a bunch of zombies and I would have the time of my life.

why hide at all? why not 'meet and greet' them 'close encounters' style and see what's up with them...maybe they can help us with the Republicans to see the 'error of their ways'. apocalypse is what it is, so by then it would be too late anyway, so what have we got to lose?
in the meantime, chill it with bat for now! - 2 years ago

So funny! I actually started stocking up on supplies for the coming Zombocalypse. This report will come in handy for my grand escape plan I've started working on.

I wonder if the majority of people obsessed with zombies and z-day really just want an excuse to destroy as many humans as possible, and not feel guilty about it cuz they're already dead

I would hide at the bmv only because I think the living dead would still avoid it at all cost.

I think this study leaves out the idea that zombies may be able to smell you. Or attract each other by groaning whenever they see a human.

The groaning thing would actually be good for you as well.
You could create a little device to continuously groan at some place to attract them all.
Bonus points if you dig a huge ditch and cover it up. lol trap. - 2 years ago

More than likely it would be those kinds of "zombies".
And by zombies, i mean humans that have been infected with a virus or parasite that effects their behaviour that mimics "the undead".
There are already some infections and viruses that can influence behaviours, so it isn't entirely impossible.Oh well, lucky me and a friend came up with an awesome action plan if the world went insane with some infection like this.
Huge shopping mall area at the edge of town, lots of ground that could be blown out to create a ditch, lots of supplies, good times. - 2 years ago

Are mall layouts really that complicated compared with most other buildings? The problem with malls, though, is that they're usually found in areas with high human population density, which would mean more zombies in general.
