    • This is a conversation that happened last week between my Mexican friend and his blonde girlfriend after seeing the trailer for 'Where The Wild Things Are'.

BLONDE:Oh my God! 'Where The Wild Things Are'! I'm so excited! Promise me you won't see it with Joey. You have to see it with me.
MEXICAN: I promise babe. Why are you so excited?
BLONDE: Spike Jonze directed it! He is awesome!
MEXICAN: Really? You like Spike Jonze? What is your favorite movie?
BLONDE: '25th Hour' was really good. I also loved 'Inside Man'.
MEXICAN:Um..yeeeah. I don't think you're thinking of the right guy.

    • My "Law Abiding Citizen" Review. (Brought to you by www.fanboyplanet.com, where you can read my written review, too.) The movie is silly, yes, but most of it is also entertaining. Except the ending, leave after the robot-drone attack. I'm just saying...

Stay tuned after the review for more random observations about the movie.

      We'll probably break 100 this week. W00t!

So my Isotope Chem homework AND this review were both due by midnight... looks like both are gonna be late.
      My bad =/

Do you also take 10% my score off for each late day?

      much love,

    • Spike Jonze and Maurice Sendak aren't going to tell your kid to behave, so get used to it.

Bonus fact: Maurice Sendak told Max Records, who plays Max, that if anyone told him they didn't like the film, he could tell them "Go to hell."

    • 2009 has thus far been a crackerjack year for 300 star Gerard Butler. With The Ugly Truth and Gamer already under his belt this year alone, along comes Law Abiding Citizen, and I'm sure the fanboys will agree that this is the film that Gamer shoulda been.

    • Where The Wild Things Are

      Overall Good movie,

Could have used less hand-held camera.

Better for adults than for children.

      Annoying Viral Marketing was everywhere.

Also: OMG, Giant Wooden Death Star!

Another Note: I meant to refer to Freud Dream Theory... and not so much any other sketchy Freud references.

    • SirDahm:

i love how you gave the story a 10/10 which you never explained because there is not definitive story, in fact thats what i HATED about this film the most, is that theres no "REAL" conflict (which you can argue because it's about max growing up, or coming of age) but for that to really shine through with good conviction and story telling, there have to be events that show it (Mainly through events that happen, and they dont) for that reason alone is why the story is by far the WORST part of this film. and i agree most everything else about this film is golden but damn it the story's not one of um. and the music should have got a 10 /10 . i gotta show love for the Yeah yeah yeahs.

    • SirDahm:

The story is basically post-modern, or even just modern. It makes me think of James Joyce's Ulysses, where the main character travels around Dublin experiencing things without any real story. It's just a regular guy and is observations on life.
So with art nowadays, the movie does say alot, and it doesn't have any story or it doesn't cheer up any of the sad characters, but then it doesn't have to because art doesn't have to do anything to be art.
But some people like to see problems for characters solved for the sake of the characters themselves. Like the one that no one listened to, I felt for him so much and wanted him to be made king so that the wild things would pay more attention to him. That is the idea of story, that Carroll would be told, "Don't worry about CW so much or those owls. They're only owls." Max and him talk about the owls and how neither of them understand them, but its probably too complicated, or maybe it was in there subtly, that Carroll doesn't need to feel jealous about a couple of owls. That is what people mean by story.
Its so subtle in this movie. But it's there. The story. I think people expect it to have more of a presence and not be so subtle.

    • SirDahm:

      Sorry for the late reply.

@nhall6: I know, we aren't very good with money or statistics. I only use the accent because I have problems speaking sometimes, it's weird, but it helps, so usually after I get into a conversation it's easier to keep it going for me and easier for me to speak, so I basically forget to do it, my bad.

@StuArt_Gould: Part of the reason for not explaining the story completely is so I don't completely ruin the entire movie for the people who haven't seen the movie yet, and also this was my first review so I didn't know how long the videos should be so I tried to quickly sum everything up, but I will explain now why I gave the story 10/10. First I should say that I believe film in general is objective, and everyone has their own view on the story and the connotation behind actions and results, so in that light I both respect and disagree with your view that there isn't a definitive story. In my view of the movie, the story is about Max learning he isn't the center of the universe, that other people have their own lives, and when he tries to make everyone do it his way instead of having a collaborative effort, or letting people branch out when they know a better way it all falls apart. I saw a lot of this in the mirroring of the Wild Things and some of the people we'd met in the first scenes (Especially KW resembles the aspects of Max's mother and Carol embodies Max, even up to the point that he matures). The entire story is a developmental stage for Max, instead of just having lots of fun with no consequences, we see from the first scene that this is a balance, and he starts to see that. I also liked how the movie left the aspect of the island and the adventure open-ended, not to say for sequels, but to question if it did happen, how long the adventure took place, or if it was all just Max sitting in a boat making voices for about an hour. I will agree with you though, looking back there wasn't any major conflict, there's instances that last a few minutes, like when Carol finds out he isn't a King, just a kid, but there's no definitive conflict like many films have made a standard. So maybe I should've given the story 8/10, but I still really enjoyed it, and I thought if it hadn't been what it was, the movie would've lacked. Lastly, I do really enjoy the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, but I still think that the music was the weakest part of the movie. The soundtrack seemed at times like a separate entity instead of a part of the universe of the movie. Thank you for your comment, I really like to try and have a conversation about my reviews so I can get better in the future.

@Paul_Kanter: Part of my review got cut off at the end, but I agree with you, I thought that Paul Dano's character should've been king at the end, but the movie was left pretty open ended, so he very well might've. I think the reason Carol didn't understand the owls is that he's the mirror of Max, and Max didn't understand them. I'm not saying that Max's mom talks to owls, but it would make more sense for a character that people basically see mirroring each other to share similarities like that and their destructive nature. The reason Carol is jealous of the owls is the same reason Max starts a snowball fight with his sister's friends, he wants attention, and he feels like they're taking her away from him. ("New Friends" vs "Stupid Friends") but I could be completely wrong, I just think that to understand both Max and Carol, we have to think of them as two halves, as crappy as that sounds, thinking back that's the only way I could really figure out their actions is by looking at what the other does. I think casual movie patrons expect the 3-point script, with a clear beginning middle and end. When a movie doesn't follow that mold exactly, say Memento, Dancer in the Dark, Desperate Living, etc, people are thrown and question if they really liked it, and that's what I really liked about this movie, it made you question if you truly liked it or not.

PLEASE get Woody Allen to review Where the Wild Things Are. PLEASE. That would be So F$%^&ing AWESOME!!!!!! Think about wild imaginations: Dr. Suess, Maurice Sendak, Woody Allen, all Jews. I think Spike Jonzes is even Jewish. Charlie Kaufmann, too. James Gandolfini, not Jewish, but still awesome.
