So the film has been publicly screened. Just not picked up by a distributor. If it has been to festivals it is known by the industry. This film is not a secret. it is also not by a long shot the only movie about black hair around.
It is unlikely that Chris Rock is such a neophyte to hollywood that he would pull something like this without having his ducks in a row legally.
This is why there are lawsuits, and lawsuits like this happen daily in Hollywood. Perhaps there will be a settlement. Perhaps there will be real money exchanged, perhaps just a nuisance payment, more likely nothing at all.
If this article was posted by anyone having to do with the movie for example it would mean that they know their case is weak and they are hoping to create negative press to increase the value of their nuisance settlement.

Please take a moment to check out my documentary film BLACK HAIR
It is free at youtube. 6 parts including an update from London, England.
It explores the Korean Take-over of the Black Beauty Supply and Hair biz..
The current situation makes it hard to believe that Madame C.J. Walker once ran the whole thing.
I am not a hater, I am a motivator.
Plus I am a White guy who stumbled upon this, and felt it was so wrong I had to make a film about it.
self-funded film, made from the heart.
Can it be taken back?

That was actually pretty good. It reminds me a lot of the Japanese automobile invasion in the 1970's. There seem to be some of the same issues.

I can't really say much. There isn't a whole lot on the story specifics, such as what are the two stories, and how did Chris come up with the idea for his film.
Either way, if he did copy then shame on you Chris. You can come up with original material for your comedy specials, but not you movies?

Film industry law is fuzzy and weird. It has a body of precedent very unlike most other types of businesses. Oral contracts are a much much bigger deal for instance. It's one reason there is so much litigation like this. Nuisance suits are incredibly common. It's rare that a movie gets out the door without at least one person threatening to sue for some reason or other.
That this actually came up as an article like this actually says to me that the case is weak. It seems to me more like a greenmail attempt to generate negative buzz than something that makes a point. The particulars aren't discussed at all for instance.

i thought it was the message that counted...
evidently nappy roots did not get enough publicity for what it was trying to get through to people.
