Paul Haggis Ditches Scientology

It all started when a San Diego church publicly supported Prop 8. Haggis asked Davis to denounce its actions but Davis never went through with it. Then the already-pissed Haggis read an interview in which Davis denied Scientology's practice of "disconnection" (forcing members to cut off communication with loved ones who oppose Scientology). But Haggis knew disconnection first-hand. His wife was forced to cut ties with her parents. The last straw came when Haggis read about the smear tactics Scientology used against its former members. That's when he knew it was time to go.
And so, after writing this letter, I am fully aware that some of my friends may choose to no longer associate with me, or in some cases work with me. I will always take their calls, as I always took yours. However, I have finally come to the conclusion that I can no longer be a part of this group. Frankly, I had to look no further than your refusal to denounce the church’s anti-gay stance, and the indefensible actions, and inactions, of those who condone this behavior within the organization. I am only ashamed that I waited this many months to act. I hereby resign my membership in the Church of Scientology.
Sincerely, Paul Haggis

I can't say that I am a big fan of his work, but I am a big fan of this letter.
Bravo Brother! Hypocrisy and corruption must always be exposed when it involves religious organizations. The sheep must be made aware about all the good and the bad to make an informed decision on who it is that they will let tell them what to do.

They own the cult awareness group, so don't call them if you can't seem to get ahold of a family member who has fallen for the sci-fi teaching, funny that a church can charge it's members for spiritual enlightenment based on space aliens. I say if you are crazy enough to believe than too bad for you.....

"Scientology just another religion" and "founded by a Lucas fan". What's the average age of the commenters here, 5?
Jebus...
The Scientology group has some problems. It's more of a deliberate tax/general fraud scam than anything else though, - 2 years ago

The best way to get even would be the way South Park did with the episode about Stan being the new leader and for Haggis to make a movie about it.
Especially with all the controversy over the lawsuit they file to try and stop it, he'll have some great publicity and lots of evidence to back it up.
With all the people that supported the Anonymous protests, he'd have a guarateed audience for it to cover the costs.

According to the definition the difference is that people are born into a religion and they convert to a cult.
I guess that only one generation isn't long enough for people to be born into Scientology.

Scientology is a religion? What is your definition of "religion"?
Scientology is closer to a cult.

Jesus led a cult until he died, now it's christianity (a religion). Religions are institutions preaching about a certain thought on god or spirituality, even if that includes alien overlords.

It was by a science fiction writer but it was 20 years before George Lucas was around.
I'm not sure if Hubbard was a fan, there was some similarities between Battlefiled Earth and Star Wars but that could have been just because they were stories in the same style

There's an urban legend that Scientology started out as a bet between Hubbard and Isaac Asimov.

The legend is that it was between Hubbard and Robert Heinlein because they were roommates in college, it's a good story and it's a shame it didn't happen since Stranger in a Strange Land was a much better book;.
