Chris Farley Ad from DirecTV (Video) Controversy for Tommy Boy, David Spade

tcmfan08
Chris Farley stars in a DirecTV ad from one of his classic films "Tommy Boy" with pal David Spade. Is it too soon seems to be the constant topic of discussion and many say Spade is cashing in on his dead buddy.

The scene from the film is one of the classics and if you have seen the entire film it is impossible not to chuckle at “fat guy in a little coat.”

E! Online quotes Spade as the actor had to defend himself over the charges he is cashing in on his friend and comedic partner. For the record, Farley passed away one week before Christmas almost twelve years ago on December 18, 1997.

"When DirecTV came to me and the Farley family with this idea about Tommy Boy, we talked and thought it would be a cool way to remind people just how funny Chris was," Spade tells Asylum via his publicist. "It is a clever homage to my friend and a movie that we loved doing."

TV Squad calls it a “Worst commercial of the year nominee” and muses that it isn’t funny, clever or original.

DO YOU THINK IT'S A BIG DEAL OR ARE PEOPLE OVERREACTING?

    • My first reaction was woo as I heard his voice and then I smiled and laughed on remembering the movie. It made me want to pull it out and watch it all over. Then I thought wow David Spade finally overcame his loss. It is a bittersweet ad and so worth keeping on the air. There is no need for David to apologize. Money or no money its just good business.

    • All of you who are complaining need to get a life. If Chris's family agreed with it then why are you on David Spade's a** about it? As far as i know David Spade is still in the buisness and needs to make money too, right? So whats the problem? I personaly think it one of the better Direct TV commercials. And the bigger question i have is, "How in the heck do they make the words work to how thier mouth's movements to match up?

    • I think if spade really feels bad about doing this commercial "after the fact" then give the money back for doing it .....will the Farley family make any money from this????

    • I dont see any problems with this. We watch movies with deceased actors all the time. We pic up magazines all the time that do special stories and tabloid news about someone who is gone and they are not always nice about it. Why are we not in an uproar over that. Didnt Direct TV have the same "scandel" when they ran a similar ad using the little girl from "Poltergeist" (sp)? Look how long she has been gone. So this fuss cant be that not enough time has passed. ALSO the families of Chris Farley and the little girl both approved of the ads and they should be the only ones that matter. I also read that this wasnt even David Spades idea. That Direct TV approached him after they spoke to Chris Farleys family. If I was Chris or that little girl I would be honored by the ads.

    • I do not find this offensive at all. Chris Farley was a great actor and I miss being able to see his new shows that keep me laughing. How many times has Elvis been used in a commercial or ad for his CD's. Some people just have different opinions and they go off.

    • everyone is overreacting, i love the movie and theres been plenty of time since his death. now i quess we cant make anything with elvis or any other celeb from the past that hasnt already been made fun of or put in skits on shows - quit being so over sensitive and take the commercial for what it is - now i want to go watch tommyboy cause its been a long time and the commercial made me remember how funny it is. i might want to watch black sheep and beverly hills ninja unless laughing at his comedy movies is wrong since he is no longer alive

    • The movie was hilarous, this scene is hilarious, what better homage TO CHRIS, than a comedy scene with a dear frend? Chris was, and still is an "entertainer", GET IT? What's offensive about that, we watch dead celebrities every day over and over and over in movies, commercials, and videos, at least this is Chris and buddy Dave together, still havin fun, so where's the "offensive" in this?

    • I agree, This is a cool way to remember Chris. He was about being funny, this definately made me smile! Very clever and pleasently familiar, I think it's great! TV Squad just had to jump on something I guess. Why can't we all just get a laugh?

    • Let him be remembered anyway he was in the business he made his career out of . There is nothing sacred about showing a persons work after they die and it pays his estate in away they are ok with . Martin luther King was used in a pretty bad add and it had nothing to do with his work, this is a movie and Farley would have no problem with it . I have to stop commenting on this shit .

    • personally I don't find the ad offensive - the first time I saw it on TV I was a little surprised, but I saw it more of as a fond remembrance of Farley than an exploitation of him
