Matt Zoller Seitz gives us a one of a kind zombie primer.

“You know, I don't think I've got it in me to shoot my flatmate, my mum, and my girlfriend all in the same night,” says Liz, one of the beleaguered non-ghouls in Shaun of the Dead. That 2004 film is a send-up of zombie movies, but you know what they say about every joke containing truth.

Ever since director George A. Romero released his 1968 shocker Night of the Living Dead—which reimagined zombies, the dark magic-entranced slaves of voodoo folklore, as shambling fiends that crave warm flesh and can only be offed with a head shot—the zombie genre has displaced the western as cinema’s most popular and durable morality play. As the video essay “Zombie 101” demonstrates, while the genre’s superficial appeal is the spectacle of torn and mangled flesh—living and dead—its deeper resonance lies in its portrait of ordinary people struggling to survive in extreme circumstances.

    • That was great.
George Romero was on the radio the other day and he said something that made my day. I didn't realize that he started his career on Mr. Rogers Neighborhood. One of the first pieces that he worked on was Fred Rogers going for a tonsillectomy. Mr. Rogers wanted to do a piece about the procedure so children that had to go through it wouldn't be afraid, yet he had George Romero direct it. I just love that. If they only knew. :D

    • great compilation and perfect explanation of zombie mentality and psychology behind it. Now they need to make a zombie film like the movie "crash" and cover multiple people and scenarios of a zombie outbreak, the characters knowledge of zombie movies and what they do to survive (and inevitably meet up or just die). Basically a movie where people will no from the get-go that these are zombies, what first? wal-mart? flee the state? barricade?
