Hulu not switching to a pay site -- rest easy, web watchers

Ahh, sweet relief. I too initially balked at the idea of paying for Hulu, but at a certain point, there are definitely things I’d pay for: Premium content night-of (especially if it was à la carte and not subscription-based), a wider selection of shows, and maybe mobile compatibility. Once upon a time, everyone balked at the idea of paying for TV — uh, hello? It’s free over the airwaves! — but then cable came along, and it was worth getting, so people did. Lightning could strike twice or something, right? Everyone used Napster for a good long time to share music for free, but now plenty of people use iTunes and buy legal copies of songs and albums: again, we pay for some stuff.
Hulu’s main competitors aren’t other paid sites like Netflix (whose streaming options are great, but supplementary to the company’s main DVD model). The site’s rivals are the endlessly accessible — but not legal — video sharing sites. Yeah, lots are riddled with malware or garishly bedecked in noise-making panel ads, but those episodes go up almost immediately, and the breadth of content is almost unbelievable.
At some point, some content is going to show up online that we’re willing to pay for with money instead of attention or time. That day doesn’t appear to be today, though. Will you revel in continued freeness with me, PopWatchers, or has your skepticism taken over?
--I don't know what to think anymore. I still catch up with shows through Hulu because I have yet to get a DVR or TiVo or whatever is used nowadays. I used to program my VCR and tape shows, but I lost the remote...

I could totally see paying for some premier shows a la carte, maybe this is the model of the future, instead of subscribing to networks for set top boxes as well, you just on demand the material you actually want to see.

As long as the "basic" free service doesn't become basic 'junk' filler, I'm okay with it, and if they provide options that I can 'customize' for a fee (assuming I believe the cost is fair) than I'm on board>

well if HULU were to be a pay site, i think it would go straight down, most of the local channels now upload their series, like fox, abc, etc, so for me hulu is just one way to see my favorite series. however, hulu is making the living with the adds, so money should not be a problem. therefore, hulu please stay free i rather watch the elegant commercials with the deep-voice guy in your page than the horrible, annoying, disturbing, distracting adds in other websites

That's good, but I rarely use it. I want to know why the networks don't have all their shows to view on their site like CBS? They have recaps and scenes but not whole shows.

i think what you meant to say is that people are starting to realize that the laws on intellectual property and copyrights are arcaic.

Smart Move, Hulu. You would have lost a majority of traffic on your site, which would have lead to a loss in advertisement revenue, hence imploding your site and essentially putting a fork in your streaming videos.
Adding premium content for a price might have some appeal to some viewers, however, I would rather not pay for something I can Download from torrents/Watch for free elsewhere/See on premium television viewing.

But does that mean that they'll redefine what is free and what is for pay - meaning some of the popular shows and movies get moved into the pay category?

This is what I thought of when I first heard of Hulu charging for material. I hope this true. I still suspect some kind of subscription fee. We'll see.
