Jewish film directors challenge Israel

Image

A series of controversial Israeli films are provoking outrage and plaudits in equal measure at the London Film Festival.

The best documentary award has gone to one of the year's most controversial films.
Defamation is a polemic by Israeli filmmaker Yoav Shamir. In his expose of America's Anti-Defamation League (ADL), he claims anti-Semitism is being exaggerated for political purposes. He argues that American Jewish leaders travel around the world exploiting the memory of the Holocaust to silence criticism of Israel.

    • This is not obvious to me, Jubal.
I always think of you as a compassionate voice.
I don't know anything much about the current situation in Palestine but I do know the pain my sweet and wonderful and gentle Jewish family has suffered from the Holocaust. This is not an exaggeration. How dare you say that.
My family and I have nothing to do with what is going on now.
The same way American families should not be blamed for what Bush did, as they are. I can not say if they are doing the right thing 100% of the time, nor is Palestine. Everyone is acting irrationally at times. Of course.

Much of it is in terror, and not rational. It is for survival; the Palestinians blowing innocent people up and I am sure on the Israel side there are the same injustices. I am not close to the problem. I live in the US. not in Israel. I am just living my life like the rest of you. I don't attend world wide conspiracy movements to hurt people, as a few of you seem to think. Most of my family and friends are very nice people and a lot of us keep the fact we are Jewish quiet. I wonder why.

From what I hear, it is very bad but I have nothing to do with what goes on in strategy sessions...as you had nothing to do with Bush's nor Obama's
From what I hear from a perceptive, Progressive student now, there is pain on all sides.
No one is completely right or wrong.
From each side there is pain.
The solution is not in insulting a whole people like that.
That is Fox News mentality..they say to blame all the Muslims.
Look at the whole picture please...that hurt.

I don't think jubal was trying to make light of the tragedy suffered by those affected by the holocaust.

But let's think for a second. The genocide of the Native Americans in the US, is not politicized in this country. If anything it is completely ignored. No one sends people to visit reservations so that they'll have empathy for Native Americans do they?

I've been in many debates over many issues...From 911 to the Apollo moon landings. There are actually individuals who throw the holocaust up, insinuating that I must believe it is some sort of hoax, to invalidate my completely well-thought, rearched opinions on those two completely unrelated issues.

Well, with the exception of the CIA smuggling KNOWN ardent NAZI's into the US during project paperclip, including Von Braun, who they put in charge of our SPACE PROGRAM. He was responsible for hanging jewish workers/slaves, for sabotoging his V2 rockets they were being forced to make. That is where the holocaust, and NASA merge.

Do you find it irresponsible of our government using ARDENT NAZI's to build our rockets? I do. But then I am criticized and then even lambasted as some sort of holocaust denier, when I actually site individuals who were responsible for some of the horrors of it.

While all the horrific things going on from both sides in Israel should be condemned, I find it hard to fathom why the holocaust should be used to defend, shield, or justify, any group or individuals violent actions.

By the way, I am not trying to cause, or minimilize your, or your loved ones pain from that tragic event. And from the many comments I've seen from jubal, I don't believe that was his intentions either.

Just one point at this moment.
I agree with you that the Native Americans are ignored and this is something that needs to end.
They need to be celebrated and supported as every culture should.
I am personally in the process of trying to think of ways to help as much as I can at the time without the luxury of a job or money, but with my particular skills and business degree.
One is to develop the Mukluk, locally.
I just posted this and it didn't get much attention.
. Instead of buying into a system that is wrecking our environment using petroleum to transport and make polyester, we should be putting our heads together with the local tribes elders who hold this information.
I will try to link to this. I have a book here by a local Native.
Someone who walked cross the USA called Peacewalker who I met at a protest in Maine, said he spoke with them and they are waiting to hear from us.

I think maybe we are feeling guilty about our own homes so it is uncomfortable but we should begin this today.

the second point is that no one should justify harming a single innocent life.
I don't respect any person who does.
A country does not act as a huge unified force.
There are infinite facets of each.
Israel has a need to exist though.
Beyond that I can't explain details or anything much of what is happening.
I am sure that there are crazy people on both sides who are damaging to everyone. I hope that Senator Mitchell can help as he did in Ireland.

    • CarolynGillis:

CarolynGillis, Please let me clarify. I mean no disrespect to the suffering, the tragedy or the horror of what your family has gone through. I have nothing but respect and admiration for the Jewish people, of which I am one from both sides of my genealogical tree. None of my family were part of the Holocaust in Germany, however, they were victims of the Inquisition in Spain. My family had to pretend to be Christians so that they weren't killed by the Inquisition.

The Inquisition was killing Jews along with "Free Thinkers" and "Heretics" during that period of time it was in existence.

What I have a problem with is that the radical right wing factions in Israel use the Holocaust as a way to silence criticism of their policies using the Anti defamation league and AIPAC to go after people who are critical by labeling them anti Semitic and not allowing any discourse to move forward. This is the same, in my book, as the Islamic leaders trying to get the United Nations charter to be amended to criminalize any criticism of Islam.

I agree that there is no room for hate speech in a civil discourse, and Holocaust deniers should be held accountable for their denial, its hate, plain and simple. But being critical of Israeli policies is healthy and needs to move forward for the healing to be complete.

Indigenous peoples from Alaska and the Northern Territories to Tierra del Fuego have been meeting and organizing into a movement, perhaps you may have heard of it? Its often referred to as the First Nations or First Peoples movement to establish an intercontinental congress uniting all the indigenous peoples of both continents into one cohesive whole.

Supporting them in enforcing the treaties they made with the United States, that they are allowed to recover what the Supreme Court agreed they should.

Look at the case of the Oneida vs New York.

    • Great that people take heed and doesn't fear the political right of the Israeli goverment. Abusing Holocaust for political purposes is a shameful act which should be exposed.

    • Frankly I have been sick of this for some time, using a tragedy to hold the world hostage. Free Speech and Criticism are a necessary part of our evolution.
