Director James Cameron said durrng an interview that the purpose of the film is not to inform people of the environmentl peril our world is facing but to make people actually feel something about it. So, given that he actually cares, and isn't just playing off of curent cultural trends, I believe that we the public should send him a message testing his own conviction regarding the environment.
As you know, this movie used more computer power than any other in history. That uses a lot of electricity. And I assur you it didn't all come from wind turbines and solar panels. Perhapse some of the movie's profits could be used to buy endangered forest lands to offset the carbon dioxide released for the purposes of making this movie.
Let me know if anyone thinks this idea could gain traction. - 2 years ago

this is a great movie for many reasons. it is not perfect and i was scared it was moving into Pocahontas territory for a while leading us to the age old noble savage flaw, but by the end i was pleased with the message.
colonialism and oppression are not just fantasy and there are plenty of examples everyday that drive home that fact that we have not stopped the ways of the past. capitalism is out of control and this movie easily parodies a mix of blackwater, halliburton and even the do-gooder scientists who exploit nature to catalog and simplify. i would have liked there to be less battle and more exploration of what it means that the savior of the aliens needed to be a white dude.....
imperial capitalism is in its heyday and hopefully the glitz and glitter of the 3D battle scenes wont take away from the power of the themes in this movie. its too bad that a movie with the subtext in the Avatar would not be successful without the wild ride color overload factor (which was awesome...)
in any case. great movie. i hope it continues to spark dialogue about the reality that we live in and what unchecked capitalism does to our planet and underrepresented peoples/plants/animals/aliens/ideas.
the real story:

Hhhmmmmmmmm. Ms DaliaTheArtist, I'm a white guy. (sort of...) I'm Italian, German, Irish, & swedish, & yes, I do feel a certain overwhelming sense of guilt for what my (our) fore-Fathers & Mothers did to the Native & Afro-Americans. I spend EVERY DAY, making sure that I not even remotely resemble those racialy driven, hateful people from the days of yore. I'm freakin' "Color Blind!!" Werrrrrrrrrrrd!!!!

Avatar? You mean Ferngully 2009?
Really though, the special effects and visual aspect of the movie were seamless and perfect. You accepted the world they created and never really thought "Oh man, that looks so CGI." As far as the plot goes, I didn't realize what "Avatar" really meant in context of the movie from the commercials which was a nice surprise but yes, it definitely got a little predictable or as Saladin said, formulaic. I thought this was a funny yet accurate perspective:
"When will white people stop making movies like Avatar?
These are movies about white guilt. Our main white characters realize that they are complicit in a system which is destroying aliens, AKA people of color - their cultures, their habitats, and their populations. The whites realize this when they begin to assimilate into the "alien" cultures and see things from a new perspective. To purge their overwhelming sense of guilt, they switch sides, become "race traitors," and fight against their old comrades. But then they go beyond assimilation and become leaders of the people they once oppressed. This is the essence of the white guilt fantasy, laid bare. It's not just a wish to be absolved of the crimes whites have committed against people of color; it's not just a wish to join the side of moral justice in battle. It's a wish to lead people of color from the inside rather than from the (oppressive, white) outside."

All in all though, it was enjoyable and definitely should be seen in 3D!

I feel no guilt. But then, those types of behaviors are appalling. I think you'd have to, in some way, be that kind of person or retain some of those traits - to then find guilt.
It's a matter of who you are. If you are not that, if you would fight against that - then you are not that. You're on another side from that side.
I am on another side from they that were - or they that are.
people should realize that what is in the soul is what counts. Doesn't matter whether your people are African blood, native-american - white; - it doesn't matter what side you thought you were on - it only matters what is in your heart. And what is in your mind.
If you have some ugly stuff in there, you got one chance to get free of it. You're the one who makes your history.

That was one of the most boring movies I've seen all year. I kept dosing in an out for the first two hours or so...but that ending was pretty amazing. Oh yeah.

Great movie that people keep forgetting isn't meant to be a stand alone movie. The story was formulaic for a reason! This movie was meant to be an introduction to the world of Pandora, it wanted you to be transported to a different world entirely, and man did it work! It really was a trip, I can't wait for the sequels to come that are going to dive deeper into the culture of the Na'Vi and see the consequences of the films ending.

Ok you nay-Sayers. Formulaic, check, predictable, check, but don't say a word about waiting for DVD! This movie MUST be experienced in 3D. It was the most amazing movie I've ever seen and I've seen a lot in my 47 years. My son and I were stunned at the visual impact (he's 15) so it wasn't just me. I don't recommend the IMAX unless you want to be looking all over the screen and not scanning with your eyes in a traditional theater.
See it in 3D and don't listen to those who want to spoil things by saying "don't waste your money". They truly don't know what they're talking about or...well, I don't know what their excuse is.
Quit ruining it for people. :)

Like a roller coaster. Awesome when you're one it - start to forget about it once you're off. Wonderful experience but would have a hard time breaking into my top 10 of actual films released this year.

I saw it earlier today and it was entertaining. I loved the bright colors and interesting designs and the huge stylistic differences between the humans and the blue monkey people. The ending battle was cool but completely predictable and kinda lame imo.

I disagree with the earlier posts about it being predictable. It was certainly formulaic, but it definitely kept you in suspense.
In any case, it was a great movie. You should see it in Imax if you have the time and the money.
Overall, I'd say it wasn't good as its arguable rival District 9, but it was worth seeing.

It's formulaic because it's taken out of an AP US History book... or "Fern Gully."

meh... It was ok... very predictable... effects and visuals are good-blah blah blah... but you knew from the first 15min. how the movie was going to go; and I struggled to keep interest...
(and I know people are going to flog me for this BUT- there are some really good "legal" bootlegs already posted in the usual places; so don't spend yer hard earned cash on this one...)

Just saw Avatar, and it was an ok way to kill a couple of hours. I agree with you completely, utterly predictable, I felt like I wrote the script, as you knew exactly what was going to happen. Still; visually stunning, as an artist I enjoyed that, the use of 3D was a nice enhancement for the effects, gave them depth without being gimmicky.
If you like to lost in some fantasy for a few hours to escape reality, this will do the trick, the message is nothing new or earth shaking.
