Just returned a few hours ago from seeing it a second time with my son. This time I bore in mind the criticism I heard here about it being a Fern Gully wanabe (or whatever). Two letter response to that criticism? BS...

I heard on the news today that Cameron is putting the 3D technologies developed for Avatar into open source, thus making them available to computer artists everywhere.

Neph, I would be interested in V's take as well -- I saw it in both 2D and 3D. Obviously the latter is a better experience though I did have a slight headache after viewing with the glasses for the three hours of movies plus previews of coming 3D movies.
The aspect I liked best about the movie is the aspect I like best about just about every art form I find compelling...it transported me so thoroughly that for most of my time with it I forgot the dozens (hundreds?) of daily concerns I seem to carry around with me these days (and that keep me awake and posting on Current at 2 a.m. on a Saturday night, heh)...

I just haven't had the spark to go watch this movie. It just never got my attention for some reason. But getting up to the Titanic record is pretty persuading...

it's visually enchanting. go see it just to see what realD is. also the plot isnt too bad, if a little basic, and it breaks a lot of tired hollywood stereotypes. i cant say much more about that last statement without spoilers, which i do not believe in.
again for everyone that has ever ruined a movie... SPOILERS SUCK!

Avatar was much more enjoyable than Titanic. Tagging a fictional crappy love story onto real events because over a thousand people dying (including scores of Oirish & I-talian-a stereotypes) isn't dramatic enough, is not quality storytelling.
Avatar does it's admittedly fairly well worn storyline well (I've heard the tired Dances With Wolves comparison (that movie was also so insulting you wind up caring more about Kevin Costners fictional horse & sort of pet wolf than the impending extermination of the Sioux which once again really happened)In the context of fictional blue space tribes the whole dances with wolves dynamic isn't incredibly insulting). I personally found myself rooting for the navvies by the end.
At it's heart Avatar is a very high quality popcorn movie like Terminators 1 & 2, like Aliens, like True Lies (without the not so subtle racism).
I personally hope Avatar does surpass Titanic's box office. - 2 years ago

This movie may very well be the most visually astounding spectacle to date. James Cameron delivers on all levels. Film of the year, and maybe the decade. Avatar is definitely going to jostle around a lot of critics Top 10 Movies of All Time...

Like you said, the main objective is to be entertaining. Several times during the movie I kept thinking to myself 'I can't believe they just did that!' when I saw something that's in almost every other Hollywood movie. It was too distracting, it kept taking me out of the movie. It could have been a lot more entertaining if they had thrown some of that money at some better writers.

Everyone stop hacking away at Avatar's storyline, writing, plot, or whatever quarks you may have about the movie. Fact of the matter is the movie was not made to showcase the art of "writing" by using unique plot twists and turns. Its a popcorn movie. Cameron wanted us to be comfortable and somewhat familiar with this kind of story so that we could sideline the analytical and enjoy the millions that were poured into Avatar's CGI visuals. If the films content was something other than what we expected, the millions and millions they put into effects would suffer. We'd be too focused on breaking down the plot and all the subliminal meanings you hippies seem to conjure up. Take it for what it is. Its an epic sci fi film meant to awe and amaze, not satisfy your craving for unique and original writing. If that's what you want out of films than there were plenty of good dramas released this year to suit your fix.

But do we really need 3 hours to get the "I can make awesome looking shit using CGI and crap" point across?
Take a look at "Star Trek." 2 hours long and just as entertaining with its effects.

I've gotta disagree with you there JonRaymond, i think the movie had a good point. dont wreck the environment. sure it was basic but what do you expect from a sci-fi action flick? have you seen the movie yet? it was visually astounding.

I didn't think the movie was that great. Visually it was excellent, but to me the story line is more important than the visuals, and the story in this movie is simply too predictable. Too many other Hollywood movies with almost the exact same plot.

well the visuals were what Cameron wanted to focus on anyway. I'd say he accomplished what he was going for.

Agreed. The story was typical Hollywood fairy tale tripe. Cool visuals and effects don't make up for a mediocre story. The success of this film is it's technology, not it's cinematic value. There is no way this holds a candle to Titanic.

This movie was one of the best that I have seen in a long time. Next to the Golden Compass (I would say the sequel as well but the government and Hollywood let the church have a say and they canned it) and Narnia this movie had some of the best computer graphics. I'm hoping there will be a sequel to this movie, unless the churches get a say in it.
