The politics of 'Avatar:' Conservatives attack film's political message

"I call it the 'liberal tell,' where the early and obvious politics of the film gives away the entire story before the second act begins, and 'Avatar' might be the sorriest example of this yet," wrote conservative movie critic John Nolte.
Filmmaker Cameron does little to hide the political nuances in his $230 million hit, which has grossed more than $1 billion worldwide and is on its way to becoming one of the top 10 highest domestic grossing movies of all time.
From its portrayal of the greedy corporation that wants to take over the natural resources on the planet Pandora -- a not-so-subtle allusion to the likes of defense contractors Halliburton and Blackwater -- to distinct religious, anti-war and pro-environment themes, the film's political messaging has rubbed many conservatives the wrong way.

Examples of movies with good-old fashioned Conservative Values:
1) Red Dawn
2) Death Wish
3) Triumph of Will
4) Rocky IV
5) Birth of a Nation
Other movies that have a "liberal" spin?
The Empire Strikes Back! The hard working Empire just want to "liberate" other star systems from the tyranny of socialism and those whiny rebels screw things up! Go back to France Luke Skywalker! Hoth is about to become a free market paradise thanks to non-elitists like Emperor Bush and Darth Cheney!

Why are people making something out of nothing? They're taking things in a movie out of context, and applying it to modern times, and current events. 1st off. If I were a film-maker. I'd want to make something that stood the test of time, and was a film that generations would love.
Next thing you know they'll say that "vampires are too conservative" and "zombies are too liberal". WTF? Who cares? When did everything suddenly become political?Conservatives should be happy that an average person, could one day go on to make the one of the largest grossing films of all-time, and not be hindered by the government. I mean...that is what they're for...right?
...or maybe they're for whatever serves their party and gets publicity. I say it's time to rob the publicity whores of their power, by simply turning our backs, and ignoring them.

Whatever, let 'em go watch Live Free or Die Hard instead and enjoy all of the conservative insight about life from that movie. If there was any.
The thing about the ultra-right wing that the rest of the political spectrum makes the mistake of assuming is that deep down they're just regular joes like the rest of us.
Deep-down all of us know, regardless whether we're left-leaning or right-leaning, that we believe what we do because we think it's going to make the world a better place. In the end, we all have the same goal, we just disagree about how to get there.
But these people aren't like that, to them it's ideology first and who gives a fuck if the world gets better or worse. People like this, these far right-wing, borderline fascist bloggers, they've already admitted that it's their way or the highway. They've publicly admitted, among many disgusting things, that if Gore was President after 9/11 instead of Bush they would not have stood behind him at all the way everyone did with Bush after the attack.
So even in a fictional environment their ideology forbids them from admitting fault about anything. It sorta reminds me of that scene in Jesuscamp where the camp counselor introduces the kids with a lecture about how God hates Harry Potter because "warlocks are enemies of God."

Sheesh, it's a movie that portrays extreme stereotypes. It doesn't implicate real individuals or systems. The motives are fake, the situations are fake, relationships are fake. Why does this have to ruffle anyone's feathers?
I can understand why one would get distressed if something similar were to come to pass, but otherwise, whats up with the defensive stance?

At least the Native Americans got to build Casinos and make use out of their land.
But what has been happening in the Amazon rainforest is a lot more similar to what was shown on Pandora to make the place unlivable.
How is that for similar examples of events that have happened and continue to happen that some don't want to admit?

It's a lot more "Dances with Wolves" than Fern Gully with the very obvious parallels to learning to communicate with the tribe and hunt game just a different species than buffalos.
What the conservatives don't like is any story that points out "the white man's burden" to increase their guilt or anything that suggests that pillaging and plundering resources to create a barren wasteland is not the sole method to be used.
It's not that the "noble savage" myth was enviable since even in "Dances with Wolves" they had different tribes making war on each other. But at least they didn't practice "scorched earth" policies that left the land unlivable like they did in "Avatar"

Though from the previews I've seen, the movie looks overly lame! I might just have to see it now if it's pissing conservatives off! With so many rave reviews, and such a high-grossing release, you oughta question just how lame it'll be. ;)
Make an effort to go see it in IMAX. It's very worth it. Even if you find the story lame, at least you'll get the most out of the eye-candy.

I never cared too much for that movie, but it was a huge success & It wasn't too bad of a film really,I just wasn't too into it!

Good point. Everyone should be on the same side, but they are not.
Neo Conservatives spawned by the Reagan era do not consider greed to be a bad thing. Greed is natural and productive for society according to Ayn Rand.
That's how people are able to justify denying healthcare and other social services to the working poor. - 2 years ago

Reedalmighty:
It is a flawed economic idea. Milton Freedman had it wrong.
Their idea is whatever heats the economy up is good. It also champions survival of the fittest - which doesn't necessarily favor the best nor ethics and morality.
It is flawed because money does not work in the way that is presumed by their dogma. They have it that money has value and might makes right.
However, the value of money is as an exchange or translator for production. An economy is strongest when all tiers of society are capable and engaged in healthy production. If a group were to take some large piece of cash from the system, the system would go broke to the degree that production would slow, goods and services would slow, people would go out of work - all lowering the value of the money itself. (along with the very money that was taken).
As production slides further, the value of money goes down further. It becomes a logarithmic slide. So the value of money and the wealth of the wealthy must include all those lowly ones that fill out the economic money-base. It is the way money works.
I told a billionaire that if he made all the money - and put it in a room somewhere, every dollar would reduce in value to ZERO.
You see? wealth must be made out of the common exchange. Money has no value without all the people having some, being productive and having a good life.
When the overall economy is healthy, the wealthy are having a better life.If some had their dream of going all the way to "supply side", they'd have the flea-eaten fur on their robes, few trashy bobbles while guarding their little stone rookery and it's few serfs.
balance - means balance. That's where each and every one feels good. Economic health.
Out of balance, no one feels good - first including all those people who wanted everything for themselves alone. - 2 years ago

It's not great. It's a technological landmark achievement maybe, but hardly great. The story is as old as Methuselah. It's typical Hollywood fairytale, happily ever after bullshit tripe.
I'm sorry, but this movie is ten steps backwards from Titanic.
They tell newbie screenwriters you have to make a great story to sell your script. Obviously that is total bullshit, All you have to do to sell a script is glorify war. That way producers get the freebie Defense Department props, sets, aircraft - you name it. This is the corporate social welfare state of America. The way to success is by pawning off the government.

i think this was a beautiful film. critics of the way it was done...pleas show me where you made something more impressive and i will listen. i get that not everyone may like this style but to criticize the message within it in our day and age is so sad. it shows a stubborn idiocy that scarrs the world's top leaders. the whole "there is nothing wrong with capitalism!" argument does not cover the high cost of many of it's practices. i cried during this movie because i knew, I KNEW, that people would criticize it without seeing how sad and real it's message is. forget the style, it is important to remind generations of people of the connections we all have to eachother and to the world around us. if this is one more movie that can do that and also be absolutly beautiful to watch... wonderful

Yes it's beautiful if you can accept death and destruction as beautiful. This is what is so wrong with our culture. We glorify and beautify war, evil, death, destruction and human suffering as if to say there is some greater good that these things happen for. That is a load of crap.
Now, aside from that, yes it's beatiful and a lovely fantasy. I do see the value and craft and the wondrful technology. I admire those things. They are wonderful in themselves.
But why must death, war, killing and destruction be necessary to make a beautiful film? That part completely escapes me. So does the fact that the story line is totally age old traditional hollywood fairy tale material. Not at all original. Are you even capable of separateing the evil from the supurb craft that envelopes it with such adoration?
The objective of the military in recruiting is to glorify war and make it look like some great and wonderous thing. Then when the troops come home suffering from the reality of PTSD with more of them committing suicide since Vietnam than were killed in Vietnam, they finally see how inglorious, base and useless war is. by then it's too late.
It's important to see war for what it is. This film subverts that and does a great diservice to humanity for these reasons.
