'Moon' and other sci-fis that don't talk down to you

There are two different kinds of science-fiction movies. The more common variety are basically action movies set in space or the far-flung future. Because of the setting, these movies are considered sci-fi, although they have absolutely nothing to do with any discipline of science. This would include "Star Wars," "Star Trek," "Terminator" and the like.
While some of these movies can be terrific, I rather prefer the other kind of sci-fi - what I like to call cerebral sci-fi.

In this type of movie, the ideas are what drives the story. While often set in the same fantastic locales of regular sci-fi, these films are rich with though-provoking concepts, using science and psychology to tell a story that inevitably deals with the nature of man. There can be special effects in cerebral sci-fi, but they don't need elaborate effects because they have science (or something close to it, anyway).

These kind of movies are few and far between, but the latest example is a quiet movie titled "Moon."

    • This article makes a decent point but takes a pretentious non-conformist attitude towards those movies he list as not though provoking. He seems to be knocking the movies for the sake of stating his prowess in scifi.

Moon is a great movie but no need to knock Star Wars to prove that. Star wars, by the way, often considered the thesis project of George Lucas' massive study into mythology and its effects on culture; Joseph Campbell, the man who helped shape the word myth, was an influential consultant on that film. It may be more thought provoking than you think.

That's just defending star wars I could keep going on the other films he knocks as well.

He also defends blade runner as cerebral. Good dialogue with emotion doesn't mean it's cerebral. Blade runner is an amazing movie that goes unnoticed, but it's a detective story set in the future.

Scifi often deals in the extremes of society, so violence does happen. That doesn't mean that films with violence don't have cerebral arguements

    • I just saw the movie... I loved it!

      [spoilers ahead]

It was so refreshing to see an A.I. robot that was actually friendly and helpful, I think that was my favorite character in the movie.
Did anyone else notice all the parallels to '2001: A Space Odyssey'?

    • Star Trek was fun almost all the time,....and I most ardently agree that it had moments of greatness,...and that Picard piece is a fine example. (Also the final episode where he is "Unstuck" in Time). Plenty of Trek scripts were strong!

    • OK hang on.
Star Wars, although a classic, is a good example of shallow SciFi, it's basically a Greek epic in space.
But the other examples- Terminator and Star Trek TNG are actually legitimate SciFi stories.

      Interesting concepts in Terminator:
      -Time travel
      -Machines revolting against humans
      -Do robots have a soul?

And there are many Star Trek TNG episodes that were thought provoking.
      The episode in which:
-Data went on trial to determine if he had human rights.
-Picard lived a lifetime in 15min which was beamed into his brain by an ancient satellite.

Anyway, I wanna see Moon though it looks good.

    • Moon is an amazing movie. The writer Nathan Parker ( Blade Runner) is brilliant and so is the acting by Sam Rockwell. This movie is an example of how great sci-fi can actually be. Moon is in the Top 3 movies I've seen in 2009.

    • I actually watched Moon last week. I had never heard of it, but it was pretty good. And I'm not one to watch many sci-fi movies. It messed with my head at the beginning, but everything worked itself out.

    • Moon is a great flick. I saw it at the Oriental theater here in Milwaukee when it came out. I loved it and thought it would garner more attention, however, this is the first I've heard about it since nearly eight months ago when I saw it. Sam Rockwell gives one hell of a performance.

    • I thought Moon was great. Funny that it was directed by David Bowie's son, who changed his name from Zowie Bowie to the more conservative Duncan Jones. A pre-occupation with space must run in the family.

    • Seen the ones listed. They were great. 2001 being my all time favorite.
"Moon" sounds good. I will be looking for it on DVD...I really do not like movie houses.

My opinion exactly. (Though the objections/critical critiques to "Avatar" have religious anti-animist roots,....while "Silent running" has a not-quite-silent anti-corporate industrialist message that WOULD be taken poorly by corporate shills,......if it had made enough money to cause pop-cultural ripples.)
If Silent running were made into a Battlestar Galactica mini series,....with the same quality of effects and production,....it would make sci-fi and "greener" fans,...... and corporate,.....mmmm,...not "enemies",....but certainly detractors.
