With advocates of Creationism a formidable force to this day, consider the plight of Charles Darwin, whose “On the Origin of Species” in 1859 established him -- according to one character in the film “Creation” -- as the man who killed God. While his landmark book on the theories of evolution and natural selection are now taken as gospel -- so to speak -- Darwin’s personal affairs and private dilemmas are less widely known.
Director Jon Amiel’s feature is a handsome and finely nuanced examination of the British scientist’s struggle to formulate his greatest work, while still honoring his deeply devout wife and confronting his grief over the death of his beloved eldest daughter.
