Current@Sundance: Restrepo

From the first frame to the jarring explosion and loss of sound, be aware that Sebastian Junger and Tim Hetherington’s documentary Restrepo isn’t about Restrepo.

It’s about what Restrepo means as a symbol for progress, for battle fatigued soldiers and for defining a war that has affected us far more than we’ll ever know.

Set over ten months of Second Company’s 15 month deployment in the Korengal Valley, which the Captain notes accounts for over 80 percent of bombings in Afghanistan, the scene shifts repeatedly between stark close-ups on the soldiers to expose every blemish and pore on their face against on-the-ground footage shot by Junger and Hetherington.
