Avatar finally ended its stretch as America's #1 movie, but people are continuing to point out sources that James Cameron borrowed from. It's become a national pastime, our version of Banshee-catching. We've rounded up 16 sources that Cameron allegedly nabbed.

if you like science fiction,...generally, go see it for sure. If you really don't, I wouldn't bank on it. But it is a "wife" friendly sort of show. The girl knows a "good man" when she sees him,....and sure enough,....the man IS a badass,...and good. See it in 3D if your going to see it,...just cuz its sooooooooo kewl that way. ( And I am not generally a big '3D" fan).
Oh HELL YES,...just go see the damn thing. I want to see it again on the big screen, all 3D'd up before it leaves the theaters,...if I can manage it. spoiler-----THE GOOD GUYS WIN.

    • Lets put it this way; its not the most exploratory or innovative work of "science fiction" ever made,....but it IS a rather satisfying MYTH. Non of the metaphors are going to cause any uncertainty as to their nature or trouble the intellect,....but they do resonate well,...tried and true. Hey,...lets face it,..."REAL" science fiction engages intellectuals,...philosophers,..researchers,...artist-types,...etc,....and has NEVER been popular with the masses. You have a super-dooper-mega-whopper-bigger-than-lifer Hollywood blockbuster like this,....and you can BE SURE your retelling a version of a myth the times are simply READY to hear again. The "new" stuff isn't what makes Avatar "work",....the metaphors at play have ALL been assimilated in the pop culture. Hell,....when "Big Religion" doesnt like it,....you KNOW its accessible material,....even THEY get it.

None are in the strictest sense since they all can be reduce to stories of the catharsis and growth of the Hero's Journey.

But maybe Cameron was letting the story follow a easily recognizable pattern so he could focus on the other aspects of the film. Since the actors had to perform so much with motion capture on a green screen it probably helped them to have more familiar motivations to identify with.

That is the whole point since it is the basis of all myths then that would make everything a rip off so it is no use to call anything original or a rip off since it is a moot point that it is irrelevant.

I might agree with booksellergirl that it was a bit lazy to focus on other things at the expense of the story but the accusation of a rip off isn't very accurate because it can be applied to any story so what is the difference?

Well,...its a "rip off" if it DOESN'T provide "added value" and produce a strong gratifying addition to the company it keeps. I think Avatar does,....but there is a judgement call involved.
