***UPDATE -DEUX***
ok, just found this video with courtin singing a true lyrical gem-even though it is the same song that was previously featured, you must journey again to her foreign country, to the world that she creates. it's as if she is birthing the song right before your eyes, in a drastically different performance. full of jazzy movement and verse, courtin leans towards scatting to beckon her love to visit, on this second time around. she is truly delivering her point of view, in a time where many female performers do not have one, at least one that is not as strong as hers. catchy original lyrics, with folk falsetto to boot. my suspicions stand correct, as i can rightly say that she is this generation's joni mitchell.
**UPDATE**
i have just switched the previous video out with a new one that speaks more to my description of courtin, below. not that i do not like "february", but it is a deeper, stripped track, that should be heard after listening to her sunnier tunes. enjoy "foreign country".
there are just far too many poser raspy, cutesy "effortless" voices- but what can be effortless when an artist purposefully tries to sound so natural, untrained, and raw. Courtin is the real deal, as in she really sounds as if she came into this world with such a voice, and I totally believe it. she recently opened for the punch brothers in charlottesville, virginia, and i was blown away by her instrument's beautiful colors and tones. the world she creates with her self written lyrics is brought to life, and seems to exist soully through her vocals.
i definitely favor her live performance over her self titled album, but i still like it, and believe in it. funny how it is the other way around with the others who so desperately want to be believable. they all blend together; it's courtin who shines through.
