“The rush of battle is often a potent and lethal addiction, for war is a drug.” Hedges wrote that line in his book “War Is a Force That Gives Us Meaning.”
The film is surprisingly apolitical, given its subject matter. It was written and co-produced by Mark Boal, a journalist who won an Oscar for his screenplay.
The winning director, Kathryn Bigelow, was only the fourth woman ever nominated in that category. She beat out, among others, Lee Daniels, who would have been the first African-American to take home the best-director statuette.

Still haven't seen these films, but even before the Oscar nod I would prefer to see Hurt Locker first.

I thought the Ole Miss movie would do better, but that's Hollywood. We did get best actress.

This story is a bit bittersweet for me. It has always been my dream to become the first female director to win an academy award, but at the same time, I finally have someone as a role model to make me strive for my future goals. I'm so happy for Kathryn Bigelow.

So glad avatar didn't win best picture. It was a great popcorn flick and cool to look at but that's it.

i'm ok with it but i think District 9 or A Serious Mans were the two best films of 09.

"The Hurt Locker," eh? The next time I want to waste two hours watching homo-erotic military hero worship, I'll just rent some porn.
(It wasn't terrible or anything. I mean, plain oatmeal isn't terrible.)

Aw, I'm not agreed with. But come now - it was up against Avatar, The Blind Side, District 9, An Education, Inglorious Basterds, Precious, A Serious Man, Up, and Up In the Air for Best Picture. How in the hell did it beat some of those? I thought it was equal parts art and army commercial. At no point did accuracy or realism enter into it. I may not know what the occupation of Iraq is like, but I know that movie was not it.

haha that made me laugh!
havent seen it, but when kathryn thanked 'all the servicemen and women fighting in iraq" i knew i would never see this film, it look like some pro-war bullcrap, that only wants to give us a sob story about the army's time, well no one forced them there, and they are not fighting for freedom, they fight in the name of the corporations. - 1 year ago
