Cove Filmmakers Expose L.A. Restaurant Serving Whale Sushi

Image

This is sad as the whale they were serving was an endangered species.

The so-called "sushi sting," which involved many of the same James Bond-like undercover hijinks featured in the film, actually began last October when the documentary's associate producer, Charles Hambleton, heard from friends that the Hump was serving illegal whale meat — a shocking allegation, even in sushi-loving Tinseltown where unusual fish imported from Japan can be commonplace menu items. Selling this marine mammal meat is illegal according to U.S. federal law and can be punished with a fine up to $20,000 and a year in prison.

    • I eat meat, but I still think it is wrong to eat animals. I mean by our own rules it would be ok for aliens to eat us just because we are dumber than them. It actually is wrong to eat anything living including plants, fungus or anything like that. Though fruits and stuff like that can be consuming with out really killing the whole plant....real solution would be to eat 100% synthetic food, which is not possible yet to my knowledge. It would actually probably help many health problems too because it would be created specifically for humans thus if eaten in exact quantities should lead to perfect health.....

    • There was also "Horse meat" on the menu... disgusting.

Everyone involved in animal-trade are MONSTERS!

Hump owner(s) should have their license permanately revoked. With all of the media attention this is getting, the feds have no excuse NOT to use this as an example to help cut down on the rampant illegal wildlifre-trade.

The penalties for selling ENDANGERED SPECIES in the US need to be stronger and more strictly enforced.

FYI - International wildlife trafficing is second only to drugs.

    • Hm personally i'd like to know what fillet of human tastes like...a nice thigh steak or maybe some flanks.... preferably a specimen that's lived a rather sedentary life style for a few years feeding off of lots of different potato chips for round a bout grain consumption but certainly not a fatty filled specimen. maybe a former athlete now turned couch potato in recent years.

I think the most desirable flesh is a well balanced male peck/breast...those perfect little beef patties right off the ribs just sitting there waiting to be sizzled with a little pepper mmmmmmmmm

    • I personally would like to try some of the whale sushi. I read the article in Santa Monica's newspaper...both the whale and the horse entree came at an $85 price tag...each!

I have had horse meat while in Japan. Between the slurps of whiskey and puffs of cigarettes, it was pretty delicious.

    • the open oceans are vast deserts. there is little life far from the continental shelves where upwelling brings the nutrients for life. algae blooms occur in limited places and the great travelers that take advantage of them are rare. there is less life in the oceans than you would guess.
where i live in santa barbara, the island channel, once teeming with cold and warm water fish the population is reduced to 3%. there was a large fishing industry here and the japanese market was flooded with urchin and abalone. truck loads of shrimp were leaving for las vegas constantly. those days are gone.
when i was a kid, a dead whale washed up on shore. it's back was sliced up by large propeller blades. the great animal was obviously rubbing up to the ship with affection when it encountered the blades.
it took an ice age for the whale to rot away.

Yup, that "upwelling" you described is being reduced by El Nino, which is yet another manifestation of global climate change.... Most people see the deep blue clear waters in the Tropics, and think it's a GOOD thing. Nope, such a lack of turbidity indicates that water IS what royulery says, a veritable desert.

I hear some of you protesting, saying, "but El Nino's been with us for centuries!" Yeah, as has the contributions of anthropogenic-induced climate change, as well.

    • eating whales/dolphins is different than eating a pig or a cow.

BUT WHY NAPOLEON THAT OFFENDS MY LIBERAL SENSIBILITIES!

Well, moron, it's because dolphins and whales are at the top of their food chain, and are obviously not meant to be consumed by anything else. levels of mercury and other minerals and chemicals become more concentrated the higher you go up the food chain. this is called biological magnification.

anything that predates on other animals and is large enough wouldn't think twice about eating a cow, the same way a dolphin wouldn't think twice about eating a fish. this is because those things are safe and logical for them to eat.

    • It's not even really legal to trade in that stuff IN Japan. There aren't enough whales left to waste them like this. Apart from the fact that they're massive blubbery, fatty beasts that are renowned for tasting like crap. The whole point of this sort of sushi preparation is that the marinade is all the taste. Those tools could prepare dog turd instead of whale an the patrons would be none-the-wiser. ...then we'd ALL be better off.

    • whales, tuna, cows, pigs, birds - DON'T EAT ANIMALS and you won't mistakenly eat an endangered, epic, species when you think you are eating a separate animal that we should not be eating.

    • Once again I will post in the face of ignorance for so-called Christians:

"The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it" (Genesis 2:15).

God didn't tell him to exploit the world or treat it recklessly, but to watch over it and use it wisely. Like a good ruler, we should seek the welfare of everything God entrusts to us—including the creation.

The Bible says, "A righteous man cares for the needs of his animal" (Proverbs 12:10).

A little wisdom for you anti-environment Christians from the Rev. Billy Graham.

    • Man.. cant compare whale meat to tuna or porc meat!! Whales are endangered species because of our excessive hunting in the past. It is just wrong to eat whales, like it would be wrong eating polar bears while there is plenty of salmon, porcs and tunas around to eat!

For the people that say who cares if they disappear.. woaw great thinking! if you only knew how frigile an ecosystem is.. the disapearance of one species can have a big impact on many things, even on our survival.

who cares if it's endangered or not?!?!
true words of an asshole right-winger

and I care because it's inhumane and wrong, i'm not a PETA freak, they can be radical and some us know that!

we don't have to extreme PETA freaks to care about an animal rights issue.

I cannot believe they DARE open CHAINS of restaurants like the Red Lobster, with the oppression and slaughter of all forms of sea life actually celebrated!

I say round up all the employees of all such sea food restaurants, and it's OFF with their heads! (*ignoring the obvious hypocrisy in killing one form of life in the name of protecting another*)

You HAVE heard of a lil' rhetorical construct called 'hyperbolic sarcasm'?

Because generally the ones who are enraged by, and who demand 'zero tolerance' prosecutions of the 'crime de jour' that's "new and rising" on current.com, are the same ones who rightly are labeled as 'reactionaries'.

Realize I'm not saying violating Fed laws blocking eating a whale (and the kicker: they dared to eat a HORSE!) shouldn't be prosecuted: a law is a law. HOWEVER, I'm just pointing out the sticky dilemma of declaring some species as not suitable for food, solely based on whether it's finally been driven to the point of extinction or not. Where's the concern for the poor over-fished cod, mackerel, salmon?

And you DO realize most cultures have survived by eating fish for millions of years, and it's currently impossible for Japan to feed all it's citizens by going "cold turkey" off all sea-life? I guess you're going to boycott the local cardiologist for recommending omega-3 oils, as well?

Or is this just a rant against those hypocritical libs in Hollywierd with too much $$$, with their fancy-schmancy sushi restaurants and all?

    • Was it labeled as whale on the menu? Were they falsely advertising as some other form of seafood? Did they specify what was in it at all? Because if it was false advertising that could have caused unexpected health problems with some of their customers. Also I wonder if there are different issues with serving sea-mammal raw as opposed to fish, and if so did the chef have other illegal experience with it? If not did they know how to serve it safely? There are so many frightening problems with this situation.
