“The irony,” Barry Levinson was saying, “is that this past May my wife’s father had a failing heart condition. He was really on the downside, and he ended up with a massive stroke. He was paralyzed; he couldn’t even open his eyes, couldn’t speak.
“He was lying in bed (in the hospital) and ... it was clear that he was uncomfortable. We asked the nurse, ‘Can’t you give him something to make him more comfortable?” She said he’s already received his medications.”
When they asked again for help, the nurse got angry and said: “‘You know I’m not Dr. Kervorkian.’ Since I started working on this film, I hear about these things all the time.”
Levinson, of course, is the Academy Award-winning director of movies like Rain Man, Diner, Good Morning, Vietnam and The Natural. And “this film” is You Don’t Know Jack, the story of the so-called “Dr. Death,” Jack Kervorkian. It debuts on HBO April 24.
