Yes, family farms are in trouble. It's sad to see the farms around here either close down or get a nice corporate logo staked at the end of each row of crops. Farming, it seems, is going the way of almost every other industry in America.

To preface, I'm against GMO's. But wouldn't PLA plastic bags and cups from corn starch of GM corn be the best use for GM corn? Is it not better that we produce PLA plastics than petroleum based?
My feeling is that PLA bags, cups, plastic crap made from GM cornstarch would be the last battle to fight in the argument against GMO's. - 2 years ago

mcjk:
No, there are ways to do it without using GMOS. GMOs are UNNECESSARY, and since you don't know how composting it reacts to seeds and soil, how can you ( in general) say it is safe?

JanforGore:
And there are ways to make plastic that don't involve petroleum, this being one of them. What I am hypothesizing is which is worse. My guess is that petroleum based is worse. I'm against GMO's, like I said. But you have to pick your battles.

Wrong. Growing GMO corn uses fossil fuels and also supports the very companies that have toxified this planet with Agent Orange, dioxin, and pesticides. See the hypocrisy? You sure are defending this staunchly for someone who claims to be against GMOS. Again, there are ways to do this without using GMOS. Now please post all of the tests done on this GM PLA to show us it does not affect soil and seed, especially if it is "Roundup Ready" BT corn. I would really like to see them to know for sure.

One thing, you need to be a little less abrasive- especially with people that primarily agree with you. I'm not trying to ruffle your feathers here. I'm asking- which is worse?
Are you saying that petroleum based plastics are better? - 2 years ago

Why choose the lesser of two evils, when there are alternatives? The choice isn't just "GMO corn or petroleum," we shouldn't be doing either. We could be using plenty of non genetically modified crops for making plastic. It's time to take the plastic industry back from petroleum, but let's not jump out of the frying pan into the fire, by turning to GMOs, let's turn the industry BACK over to hemp. Hemp can help displace other intensive and damaging industries as well.
We didn't listen when,
In 1916 the U.S. Department of Agriculture issued an urgent warning: "America does not have enough forest land to last to the end of this century, given our vast appetite for paper, building materials, cellulose and other useful wood pulp products." The bulletin containing this warning, bulletin 404, also offered a profitable and sustainable solution: "Grow more hemp! Virtually anything made of wood can also be made with hemp and it has a much higher sustainable yield, whereby we can enjoy a net gain in commercial productivity and an overall growth in our standard of living."
But we should have. Now is the time to learn from our mistakes and take back these basic human institutions from the clutches of the corporation that control them.

There is a case in the U.S. Supreme Court too. They have been hearing arguments on whether a genetically engineered pesticide-resistant alfalfa violates the National Environmental Policy Act. The case pits organic farmers against Monsanto, whose genetically altered alfalfa could spread its genes to neighboring crops, via cross-pollination and prevent them from being able to label them as "organic." This is the first time the Supreme Court will address the issue of GM foods.

Write the White House, the USDA, your state legislature and call for labelling, and then continue to spread awareness about this. Call for a boycott of all their products, and join up with organizations like the Institute for Responsible Technology and the Center for Food Safety. Word of mouth is truly the best way to turn this tide, and I think we can do it.

If the U.S. government has its way, a powerful intergovernmental group you've probably never heard of may soon prevent anyone anywhere from labeling genetically modified (GMO) food.Operated by the United Nations, the Codex Alimentarius is a collection of guidelines, codes and recommendations regarding food safety and labeling standards used by the World Trade Organization (WTO) to settle international disputes regarding food and agricultural export agreements.
According to draft language circulated by the FDA, the U.S. will oppose a proposal at an upcoming meeting of an important Codex committee that would allow the labeling of genetically engineered food. Consumers Union and more than 80 family farm, public health, environmental and organic food organizations have raised concerns that the U.S. position will create major problems for American producers who want to label their products as "GMO-free."
Unfortunately, rather than taking a proactive stance on GMO labeling and standing up for the rights of American citizens, the Obama administration has incorporated pre-existing Bush administration positions, stating that Codex should not "suggest or imply that GM/GE foods are in any way different from other foods."
Leading national food policy experts believe this position directly contradicts USDA Organic standards, which prohibit the use of genetically engineered products. If adopted, the Obama administration's proposal might not only weaken organic standards, but could also lead to further genetic contamination of U.S. organic crops, the fastest and most profitable segement of agriculture today.
Even worse, the current U.S. draft position paper declares that mandatory labeling laws such as they have in Europe are "false, misleading or deceptive." If the U.S. succeeds in writing the proposed Codex regulations, any attempts here in the U.S. to label foods as genetically engineered, whether voluntary or by law, would become far more difficult.
This extreme position on genetically engineered food is unacceptable.
Join CREDO Action in calling on the US delegation to the Codex Committee meeting, led by representatives of the FDA and USDA, to drop these positions and support proposals to allow countries to make their own decisions on the labeling of genetically engineered foods.
