Maybe because almost all superhero movies suck? They'e tried to do the hulk what? 3 times? 4? Always sucks. The batman franchise is the basically the most successful one out there and it still bats under .500.
Mystery men and kick ass both have strong female leads and were good movies. Yeah cat woman was a heaping pile of do doo, but if you read the original miller Electra Assasin comics, which were the good ones, it's pretty clear that his symbolic non linear internal narative style is basically unscriptable.
The sad fact is that if they are not really really careful wonderwoman and red sonya are both going to suck too. Red Sonya was just a flat out lousy comic. Symm made a living for years making fun of it. One of his sthicks was all the scar tissue that must be under the chain mail bikini from all that chafing. As for Wonder Woman it's got all of the schlocky baggage the other 70+ year old titles do like superman and batman, but it hasn't been given the years of obsessive fandom love the other two got in the 80's to work them back into usable charecters. The best wonderwoman comics are actually generally world war two era stuff, which is generally an awful period what with all the war propoganda crap.
Onder Woman has potential, but someone is going to have to be clever. As for red sonia if they keep much more than the name and the hack and slash there is no hope. That thing was one of the lamest most sexist pieces of drek marvel ever put out.

This is the problem that comic adaptations have. Movie people clearly don't understand comics. Most of the comic adaptations the author names aren't even fucking comics! D.E.B.S, Powerpuff Girls, Aeon Flux, My Super Ex-Girlfriend, Dead or Alive, Tomb Raider, and Charlie's Angels are not comics! Do real research!
Also, its kinda embarrassing when you post an article about how there are no good strong female superheroes on film while one is currently in theaters. Hit Girl from Kickass is strong and can't be sexualized cause she's underage. What about her eh? - 3 years ago

Storm and Mystique? Not a mention for them? Storm was a Goddess in her home town and after Mystique evolved some, she could mask her smell and her brainwaves, so no could tell her apart from the real thing. And she could and did beat the crap out of several men, so what if she snuck up from behind them? And the Phoenix? And you claim to like the X-Men? She dominated! Jean Grey? Even Kitty was pretty pimp and she wasn't very strong at all. There are plenty of wonderful female superheros, just not too many in movies.

P.S. Rouge had super strength and the ability to fly all the time, so she doesn't need to take the powers of others. She only did that when the whole group was getting their asses whooped or it had important strategic value. Unless you watched X-Men Evolution, but I don't think that show should count. They butchered it.

They should make a she hulk movie. BIG GREEN LAWYER LADY,....who occasionally has dates with gods in such and presides over cosmic trials and seems to be aware of the literary nature of her existence. ( That character was always good when the writers had their humor hat on and wit-shit together! ) The Scarlet Witch has a lot of potential as well,....if they are willing to let her be "crazy" enough. Tim Burton could film a good Witch.

It's because no one has bothered to take female superheroes seriously yet, in the mainstream at least. They focus too much on "look she's hot! Oh and she can fight pretty good too, I guess." Batman and Iron Man get all this cool tech, and women are stuck with whips and armor that only covers her forearms. Weak. So basically female superheroes are thrown into battle looking and acting like dominatrices instead of warriors. It would be really cool to see someone attempt a real female superhero movie. It would be awesome to see a real woman fighter taking on villains and being a hero. And before anyone starts going "OMG women are weaker than men, it's impossible! *cry* *wimper*" I think it would actually be interesting to see her deal with that. She'd have to rely on wits and really know how to fight to kick some bad guy ass. She'd really have to prove herself to enemies and allies alike. It would make a great movie, in my opinion. So if you excuse me, I have a script to write. :P
Oh yeah, it always amazes me how so many sexists crawl out from under their rocks to post in threads like this. Are you so threatened by the idea of a strong woman?

this is dumd and poorly researched there is a myriad of strong smart independant superheros that are female. If a girl wants to find one she does not have to look hard. I can think of far more superwomen successes then failures. Only three come to mind: supermom from the stan lee reality series so you wanna be a superhero, the eleckra movie, and catwoman, but the last two werent failures because the characters were no good. the reason they didnt work is becuase little girls dont buy superhero comix and dont care much for hyper violence and action its just not there bag. also elektra and catwoman seemed to try to apeal to a female audience it didnt have with tons of spice girl girl power. Further more if there are chuavinistic overtones in the comix its because they are written for teenage boys and adult nerds, its fantasy, and i dont buy that shit that chicks say the woman are depicted to sexually and are an unrealistic standard for woman to which i say yeah, no shit, there fucking superheros wonder woman can fly why the hell can't she have double dees doing it, and further more the men depicted in comix are equally over sexualized -do we really need to be able to make out the outline of their nipples? why the hell not?shit the guys wearing a bannana hammock! But more so then any other reason those movies failed is becuase they didnt embrace what they were and instead tryed to do something different and completely lost the built in audience they were banking on. get micheal bay, throw megan fox in it and she better be wearing very little and acting even less cause thats what a comic book movie should be blood and boobs baby empires were built on on em that and rock and roll

Because women are the main characters. Nobody takes violent women seriously because females just aren't as ruthless, strong, and jagged as men are. They always end up looking like comedies because it's funny to see a woman being "bad ass." It's like watching a little kid play fireman.

Because whether you're a man looking at a woman for sexual pleasure or a woman looking at another woman to compare body sizes, people are obsessed with the woman body. What I mean by this is that women look more attractive on film doing martial arts type moves, where their body is their superpower.
Guys who kick ass usually have bulging muscles and look awkward when doing acrobatics more than women. Even the superheroes who are women are well known for phtysical maneuvering. Superheroes are macho individuals, hence the typical male persona. Women are better at playing more sexy characters, the best example beign vmapires (Kate Beckinsale in Underworld is a favorite of mine ;D).

Women superheroes represent a double standard, especially when violence is taken into the equation...hitting a woman is supposed to be "cowardly", right? Well, when this said woman is a superhuman or even a regular woman wearing a costume, she is suddenly given a pass to go kicking guys in the balls...which is stupid.
Beyond the fact that is a simple fantasy, I don't think anyone really wants to see a woman superhero except women. Unless she is sexually exploited with her tits out, what guy really cares? Maybe she can be super at sex, but that's really the only exception to the rule. I, for one, can't stand the superhero genre...when they start donning capes and weapons and doing violent acts that the average person would catch repeated assault charges for, I say the hell with the clown mess...
...its one reason why I never understood women in fighting games either....why do women in Western culture constantly think they need to prove their strength and worth by adopting the behavior of men? If anything, it makes you less attractive, less feminine and to me, an annoyance.

HaloedGriot:
often women are given two choices: they can either accept that they are inferior or they can change their nature. Men are seen as powerful, woman as weak (however nice you want to view it), so what would make more sense? Men to act more submissive and feminine or women to act more in control? And it has gained women some ground for the sacrifice of perhaps who they are, though I can't say all women are passive and weak. Of course that's a stereotype and the words have some very bad connotations in themselves.
But to say that women can only be what woman are supposed to be, and that otherwise is an annoyance is unsettling to me. Women and men can act how they choose, and you're condemning that freedom.
As for the genre, yea it's pretty lame. I don't understand connecting to these archetypes anyway. It's so far from reality it's impossible for me to connect with that - tits or dicks bulging.

So how would you feel about an actual woman being stronger than you? Does this thought intimidate you? Disgust you? Would you dismiss her as not feminine and gross because she can do more push-ups then you? Superhero movies are dumb, on that we agree. But a strong woman--not Hollywood I-have-a-hint-of-muscle "strong"-- but a woman that has complete domain over her body fitness-wise and doesn't hold back is sexy as hell.

the problem is that there are no good superhero movies...everytime i see a movie based on a comic book i see people acting like goofballs. as if they are acting like moms and dads in front of their kids...and lets face it most actors come right out and say it "my son/daughter is a huge fan of the (insert popular hero here) cartoon, so i had to get the part."

Very cynical reviews that only shows they wouldn't know what a good movie female, superhero or otherwise was, since they used only arbitrary opinions that had nothing to support the points.
They just follow the old adage, those who can't do anything creative can only criticize those who can.
"Conclusions? Goofy, tongue-in-cheek tones don't work so well, but neither do serious tones. Big, stupid movies don't work, but neither do small, slick, "B" movies. It doesn't seem to matter if it's a male or female director. Ensemble movies don't work, but neither do solo ones."
With those conclusions that eliminates most of the combinations possible. That only leaves room for very farfetched possibilities for a good movie Some of the movies did have poor scripts so they didn't show the superheroes to the best effect but that wasn't true of all of them.
They did have several good female superheroe movies on that list that they couldn't recognize.

When women start buying comic books, they'll get more good superhero movies.
Good superhero movies come from good comics. Comic books are a niche market dominated by males. Especially superhero comics.
Americans have a stigma against comics. In Japan grannies to toddlers read manga. In America, they are seen as boy/child's entertainment, which is far from true. Despite this, comic companies in order to survive continue to try to reach out. Female leads are becoming pretty common. So you'll probably see more in the future. - 3 years ago

Okay it worked. It's called 'No More Heroes' (suppose to be ironic) and the words say "She's got the power, she just doesn't know how to use it yet" in the end she's pretty awesome :)

Cool, I like the braids and boots.
I did mine as a comic before I did the animation but with a combination of 3D models and Photoshop instead of just drawing it.

That's why they need to make a Wonder Woman movie! That'll be kick-ass. Speaking of such, Hit Man is and awesome "superhero"
