Are Indie Films Truly Independent or Co-Dependent?

Mark Lipsky, with a 30+ years career in film, recently launched his blog, Light a Fire. He bases it upon Stranger than Paradise, a film by Jim Jarmusch, which I now have to see. I have seen one of his Coffee and Cigarettes, with a scene where Cate Blanchett plays against herself in a dual role. She absolutely blew me away.
Anyway, Mark goes on in his blog about indie film, DIY filmmaking and co-dependent versus independent. He says if your courting producers to get multi-million dollar budgets, that’s not indie. That’s co-de. Indie is making a film for $96 like Zachary Oberzan did.
Then he talks about how “commerce has no role – or at least should be the absolute last thought rather than the first, second or tenth – in the independent filmmaking process….” Amazing. I’ve been thinking that for years, and even saying it, and getting shouted down too, just like Mark is now.
