The “Invictus” trailer reveals the film’s basic story. It’s 1995. South Africa has emerged from apartheid. After 27 years in a cell on the infamous Robbins Island, Nelson Mandela is elected president.
Yet, at the top of this remarkable man’s “to do” list: forgive the men who put him in prison. He is determined to rebuild one nation, black and white. To do that, he forges a partnership with the captain of the Springbok rugby team, a squad beloved by Afrikaners but despised by blacks. Inspired by his words and an entire nation’s good wishes, the team wins the sport’s World Cup the year South Africa is the host country.
Yes, watch the trailer, and it appears to be just another feel-good story. The Springboks win won for the Gipper Mandela and South Africa.
But what the trailer doesn’t -- can’t -- do is show how powerful this film is. It can’t come close to revealing the subtlety with which director Clint Eastwood and screenwriter Anthony Peckham approach the story. It also can’t begin to show the muscular intensity that star Morgan Freeman brings to the role of Mandela.
