Though far from the most sublime study of age anxiety, “Solitary Man” is a surprisingly subtle and affecting film. Certainly no “Wild Strawberries” in its consideration of mortality, or “Last Tango in Paris” with its cri de coeur over the diminishment of masculine grandeur and glory, yet, in compelling fashion, it suggests some of the gnawing questions that confront a middle-aged male face in the mirror each morning.
