Is Marvel's movie universe about to skip over the dull parts of each character's history? A new rumor about the villains in The Avengers suggests that Iron Man, Thor and Captain America's movie incarnations will leap eight years' worth of stories in a single bound.
Comic Book Movie is amongst various websites and media outlets to have received rumor that Marvel's 2012 Avengers movie will not follow comic continuity by having Thor's half-brother Loki (accidentally) be responsible for the formation of the team, but instead find itself jumping all the way to the Kree-Skrull War storyline from #89-97 of the original comic via a brainwashed and rampaging Hulk that may offer moviemakers a chance to avoid working with Ed Norton again.
For those not well-versed in Avengers history, the Kree-Skrull War sees Earth caught in the middle of an intergalactic war between two alien races, the relatively noble and occasionally-blue-skinned Kree and the untrustworthy shapeshifting Skrulls, who would later go on to invade Earth again in 2008's Secret Invasion mini-series. According to the rumor, the Skrulls would be the central villains in the Avengers movies - and, yes, that's plural, because the rumor states that the Skrulls wouldn't stand revealed until the end of the first movie, with the Kree-Skrull War itself taking center stage in an as-yet-unannounced-but-are-you-really-surprised sequel.
