The films of the French director Jean-Pierre Jeunet are marked by a brand of vaguely tainted whimsy and manic charm. Threading an almost vaudevillian style shtick through a post-modern morass of influences, he might be considered the Coen Brother that got away.
With a similar excess of cinematic flair, he has, unlike Joel and Ethan, not reined in his hyper-enthusiasm for innovative filmmaking techniques, but favors a fragile hope where the Coens lean toward misanthropy. “Micmacs” is a jumble of absurdist antics and cartoon calamities, yet has, as the lady contortionist in it says of herself, “a sensitive soul under its flexible exterior.”
